HF3676 by Rep Heidgerken would change the nothern pike regulations to mandate spearing on all lakes and stop the DNR Commissioner from managing the lakes. I wonder how long it will take for quality northern pike lakes like Mille Lacs and Cass to be turned into stunted northern lakes like Leech and the Whitefish chain if this passes? We pay DNR biologists to manage the lakes as the lakes should be managed. The Legislature should let them do their jobs.
Outdoor News has an article about this bill this week (3/14/2008). It only talks about the part of the bill that mandates spearing the muskie brood stock lakes. The article doesn't mention the part of the bill that takes northern pike management out of the DNR Commissioners hands.
Even eminent chartered accountants are known, in their capacity as fishermen, blissfully to ignore differences between seven and ten inches, half a pound and two pounds, three fish and a dozen fish. ~ William Sherwood Fox, Silken Lines and Silver Hooks, 1954
