Has anyone else taken a look at the 2008 DNR Omnibus Bill that changes the Walleye limit to four. There is also a provision in there to change the fish house licensing. Since there was some confusion as to when the house could be left unattended and not licensed they are changing it to be "if it is left unattended it needs to be licensed." No longer any mention of "unattended over night".

Thanks for the update!

I know I'm in the minority on this but getting rid of the shelter tag requirement was just plain stupid in my opinion all its done is create confusion and a big dent in the DNR's budget.

As far as the new change it's going to cause more problems now you can't go visit a nearby fishouse or to shore for any reason without a chance of getting a ticket.

I'll be paying the $12 again this winter just be on the safe side.

My 2 Cents.

all permanent shacks need a shelter tag.all portables do not need a shelter tag.but they need the ID tag.unless you plan on leaving your portable on the lake over night you will need a shelter tag also.

Here is what is in the new bill.

Clarify shelter licensing. Clarify that any shelter left on the ice unattended must be licensed. The 2007 legislature eliminated the requirement for licensing “portable” fish houses, but the final language was unclear about the conditions under which a shelter on the ice would qualify as a “portable.” All shelters are to some extent portable because they must be installed and removed each winter. Shelters that are brought out and removed each day are generally not left unattended because they could easily be taken. This clarifies that, if left unattended, the shelter would need a license.

The problem is what does "unattended" mean? If you go back to shore to get something out of your car but leave your gear next to the shack (but no lines in the water), is it "unattended?" If you go visit your friends who are set up 500 yards away, is it "unattended?"

Or, what is most likely the intent, if you go home for the day and leave it there, is it then "unattended."

Try explaining that to some officer who is having a bad day and needs to fill his quota of ticlets.

unattended is unattended weather you go 500 yrds or back to shore.your house is unattended.i know most ppl would go far anywasy if they had all there gear in it.remember this is the dnr we are talking about.if your not around or in house they will tell you is an unattended shelter.

How close is around? Or, will it be up to the officers disgression?

I'm not gonna break my shack down to go to shore when nature calls(#2). Or when i take my 4yr old out and she stays in the jeep till the house gets warm.

I think that they should have left the law alone or be more concise about "unattended". Like if your within eye shot during the day.
Just my :2cents:
Edit: I might just have to spend that 12 bucks just to be safe. Silly isn't it.

Your allowed 200 feet to your tip up so I would guess you have at least that far. Start getting to far away and I think you could start having a problem depending on the CO. I think if you run into shore for some reason your probably asking for a ticket.

I agree with Retired on Osakis that an unattended house will fall under the same law as a tip-up. I think it is a joke, but for 12.00 bucks I won't take a chance. I will not leave it up to the CO's to make a decision because we all know what the end result will be.
