I was out on a smaller lake recently and was surprised to find the crappies cruising around only a couple feet below the ice.. The few that were deeper were hardly interested in eating. The ones hugging the ice were eager to eat.
Yea, a couple of weekends ago I ran into the same thing. I could catch them a couple feet below the ice but not on or near the bottom. And they seem'd to come in waves. Two or three would bite and then nothin for 15-20 min.
A few years ago i was catching them 6 inches below the ice....then a few bugs came up the hole.Guessing they were cruising the bottom of the ice for bugs
My guess is guys that they are finally coming out of the deep and stocking up for the breeding season. I have been running into the same thing. Can't wait for the bay bites best time ever!
Where fishing is more than a hobbie... It's an Obsession.
People who fish for food, and sport be damned, are called pot-fishermen. The more expert ones are called crack pot-fishermen. All other fishermen are called crackpot fishermen. This is confusing. ~ Ed Zern, 1947
