Hey I typed myfishingpals.com into google on accident and it gave me this http://www.quantcast.com/myfishingpals.com/demographics
The summary page sais "This site reaches approximately 13,662 U.S. monthly uniques. The site caters to a mostly Caucasian, heavily male group. The typical visitor visits gandermountain.com."
What that all about? Do they just keep tabs on websites? And how do they have a clue about house hold income, gender, education, and other things...?? It had charts for traffic to the site and all sorts of stuff.

There are a bunch of sites out there that claim to show stats and demographics of various sites. How do they do this? It's usually a snap shot and estimate of users from a group that are members somewhere. For example, Alexa does this sort of thing and they use the Alexa toolbar to track user usage. Alexa is probably the largest when it comes to this type of stuff. Alexa is based on visitors with the Alexa toolbar or Alexa cookie. Think of Alexa as a rating system much like TV. They are using a small sample of the population and showing you stats.
The problem with Alexa and others like it, is that a large number of its toolbar users are in the online marketing or web publisher business, giving sites which attract such audiences higher rankings. Also, the toolbar cannot be installed on Mac. This can really skew the results. Like all of these types of sites, the results are fuzzy at best. With billions of pages being served, how can you wrap your arms around who gets hit by whom?
For example, last year at this time, our Alexa ranking was 48,000. Now this doesn't seem like much, but believe me, it is considered VERY high. It showed that of all the users on the internet, we had a daily reach of .001% of ALL of the users. And our page views were .0006% off ALL page viewed on the internet. In other words, there were 1,319,872,109 users on the internet in 2007. That means that we supposedly were getting 13,198 users per day. Now that would mean approximately 400,000 visitors a month. In reality, if I remember correctly, we were probably getting more like 40,000 per month.
Now this year, Alexa shows us way down at 50% of what we had last year, yet my stats show that we have more then doubled in visitors per month, so go figure. You really cannot pay attention to this stuff. The proof is in your own logfiles.
So how do other sites get these stats? Probably by cookies, software downloads embedding tracking software, etc. I have seen at least 4 or 5 sites out there showing stats and demographics on our site, but have yet to find any that are accurate.
