Well last year was my first to watch Minnesota college football as an "instater". Even living on the West Coast and USC/UCLA country I had to love a team that had a Golden Gopher as a mascot. I was warned it would be an ugly year for the Gophers... and it was. However, there was some really good football played last season at the 2A and 3A level in Minnesota.

Today is national signing day for college football recruits and I just thought I would throw out there that the Minnesota Gophers are having an outstanding day...and recruiting season at large. They have attracted some very good players to come play for UM.

The current recruit class is ranked as the 17th best in the nation. They are immediately ranked in front of Auburn and Virginia Tech!
You can see ratings and recruits here http://rivals100.rivals.com/teamrank.asp?SID=880

However, the day isn't over and it is possible they could snag a few more before it is all said and done.

This could be the turning point UM football has needed and lay a foundation into the team that can be built on for many seasons. It looks good right now.

This may be the best positioned UM football has been since the days when the feet of Ricky Foggy danced through the Metrodome and on into fame in the CFL.

GO GOPHERS!

It looks good on paper #3 in the Big Ten as far as a recruiting class.

I'll hold off on predicting any success we may have in the future until I see results on the Field.

The UM Golden Gophers 2008 recruiting class continues to garner national recognition.

Here is a great article on how the recruiting strategy has changed for the Gophers and the excellent results it is producing.

It may be in a year or two down the road yet... but I think I can smell the beginning wafts of Wolverine's and Buckeyes on the grill!

Go Gophers!

Well in this case I think that perhaps the Minnesota Golden Gopher fans may be glad to hear an , "I told you so". I made the original post predicting upcoming Golden Gopher success on 2/6/08, that was was a good while ago. Not many folks were willing to even believe it was possible to see a good Gopher team at that time. A history of too many years of disappointment it seems. The one advantage of being an outsider is you do not have years of history that tints your vision and the lens you view things through.

The turnaround of the UM football program has been because of a few very important things in my opinion.

1. The point this thread started on...Coach Brewster and staff have recruited very well...they are also starting to get in state talent interested in staying in state.

2. This young talent has began playing better much sooner than was expected.

3. Coach Brewster, and the defensive coaches, have really coached up the defense and limited the oppositions ability to put them in a hole early. This has stopped the Gophers from always having to spend the bulk of a game with a limited play book making calls that are always in "catch up" mode.

4. It is obvious that the mentality of, "We can win this thing" now pervades the team. That winning attitude that punches back and looks for a way to win, as opposed to an excuse as to why we lost, is with the players now. It has been a while since they believed they could beat any team that walked on the field with them. It looks like they do now!

IT IS VERY POSSILE THAT THE GOPHERS WILL BE IN THE ROSE BOWL THIS YEAR

It is certaily not a given, however, they do have the inside track.

One real encouraging and cool note is this...

If the Gophers finish 11-1, the 10-game turnaround would mark the biggest single-season reversal of fortune in NCAA history. The record is nine games, by Hawaii, which went from 0-12 in 1998 to 9-3 the next year.

I hope they do. I love the smell of grilled wolverine and buckeyes in the morning. If anyone deserves a while on the humility heap it is those arrogant programs!

So congrats to the Gophers this year. It has been a while since Minnesotan's had a team that put electricity into the air...but they have one now! In February of 2008 this Southern California boy could tell good things were coming for Minnesota....here's hoping it's a long and successful ride!

GO GOPHERS!

Big 10 football, I hate Big 10 football, not that they are bad teams, because they certainly aren't, but every time ABC puts out a coverage map for regional coverage I get the Big 10 game and that makes me miss some Cornhusker games. I do like where Gopher football is headed. I was not convinced the new coach could do a good job, but thankfully I was wrong. Nebraska is breaking in a new coach this year. He seems to be on the right track as well. Hutchison, MN native Nate Swift just broke Jonny Rodgers all time reception record that has held since 1971, now that's some good Minnesota talent. Today is Nebraska-Oklahoma day. One of the best all time rivalries. Unfortunately Nebraska will probably get our a**es handed to us. Regardless,it will be an exciting game.

So, go Gopher's, unless you are playing the Cornhusker's. Not a likely scenario.

College Football, gotta love it.

I hate to break it to you guys, Kevin Cosgrove is your new Co-defensive coordinator. While he was with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, he sank us to nearly the bottom in every defensive ranking. In his last year 2007, we finished 5 - 7. Our defense couldn't tackle its way out of a wet paper bag, much less figure out how to stop a spread offense. I hope he has gotten better, but he didn't even coach last year. So good luck. It make's about as much sense as hiring Gene Chizik to coach at Auburn. My sympathies are with you.

By the way, this year with Bo Pelini we finished 9-4. Still not where we want to be but we won the Gator bowl against a speedy Clemson defense. With Cosgrove we would not have got there in the first place, but if we had, we would have been KILLED.

That is REALLY BAD NEWS about the Gophers hiring Cosgrove.

He almost single handedly destroyed the Nebraska Blackshirts. For those who are unaware the "Blackshirts" was a designation given to defensive players in pre Cosgrove Nebraska times that exhibited exceptional skill, aggression, and intensity... not to mention they would knock your jock off.

Cosgrove took perhaps the most aggressive hard hitting defense in division 1 football and turned them into an absolute cellar dweller on every statistical defensive measuring stick.

The INCREDIBLE thing is that Nebraska had one of the nations top 10 rated division 1 football recruiting classes EVERY YEAR he was there. Well... when you have the players on scholarship to outplay virtually any other school...and you get out played and out hit..especially on defense..year after year.....the OBVIOUS answer is that the coaching is inferior. MANY of the cornhusker players related how this was true. Nebraska no longer did live tackling, etc. in practice. You were sent to the locker room for fighting...why not just put a dress on the guys and sit them with the cheerleaders!!!

I had great hopes for the up and coming Golden Gophers. However, with a mistake as big as hiring Cosgrove as the defensive coordinator the sight we see may be a sunset rather than a sunrise.

I think it is fair to say that this is the most major error the new Gopher coaching staff has made. I also fear it may be a fatal one.

This is VERY bad news for Gopher fans!

However, in fairness I will have to add that Cosgrove is a former Big 10 coach at Wisconsin and familiar with the conference. I believe he was a linebackers coach for the Badgers. Undoubtedly his greatest strength is that he has consistently proven himself to be one of the best recruiters in the nation... a poor defensive coordinator...but a very good recruiter.
