WebDude,

I have a question. I see you have added a list of new users in the upper-right of the main forum page. I have seen around 20 to 30 new users sign up in the past 2 weeks. How come such a small fraction of the users actually post? It would seem that if they went to the trouble of signing up, they would at least post a hello in the new user forum.

Ah... an age old question. If I could only answer this one! We have had this problem since the beginning. Maybe if we asked one of these new users, they could chime in? Believe it or not, it is a lot better then it used to be. A year or so ago, we were getting about 5% of the new users signing up that actually posted something. Right now, it appears to be around 20%. This is one of the reasons I put the list of new users in the forum... I thought maybe if they saw themselves there, it would spur a post, somehow. Of those 20 users listed there, it looks like 5 or 6 actually posted something. That's pretty good, according to historical data. What I find really interesting is since I changed the way people sign up, you would figure they would want to post something. Right now, they have to fill out the form, acknowledge that they read the terms and conditions, and then respond to an automatic email that is sent to them. Now you would figure that if a person went through all that, they would at least pop in and say "Hi!" Oh well... nothing I can really do about it.

By the way... the reason I made it more difficult to join is because of all the crap I was getting along with automated bots filling out the form. We have really cut down on the number of submissions since I added this. I also added a captcha (you need to fill in a series of numbers displayed as artwork) for any directory submissions. This has really helped with those as well. I was going to add a captcha to the registration form as well, but thought it would be just another hoop that a perpspective user may not want to go through.

Any suggestions on any of this stuff is always welcome, you know smile smiley

In fact, any suggestions on how to make this site better is open to anyone. I really try to implement as much functionality into the site as I can. The number of views was a suggestion. the left hand menu order was a group decision by suggestions posted. The mission statement was a suggestion. The smilies was a suggestion. The showing of users and guests were both suggestions. etc. etc. etc.

Some of the suggestions I would like to implement, but they require time. They are still in the works, I just haven't gotten around to implement them. That's the rub when you build something from scratch.

There is some functionality I would like to implement that is easy, but a pain because it would overlap the way some things work now. For example...

I want to implement the signature files for users to be called up in the forum instead of written when they post. This is a good idea because if someone wants to change their signature file, it would automatically change all their previous posts. I really like this idea and I am going to implement it. The problem now is that the signature file is appended to each post at the time of the post, instead of calling a signature file when viewing a post. What this means is that of the 68,000 posts already in the database, each and every one that has a signature file would need to be updated to take that signature file out. This is really a pain! So, when I implement the new way to do signature files, all the old posts ar going to display 2 signatures... the new one which is called when viewing a post, and the old one which was written with the post. (is this making sense?????).

Anyway, at some point I have to just make the change. Relatively easy to do, but I am slow to do it because it would look bad for a bit, especially on all of those old posts. mmmmmmm frown smiley

Okay, let's put it up for a vote on the signature thing... Easy to implement, hard to fix old posts... I would like to do it but the old posts are going to have 2 signatures in them... at least until I can figure out a way to fix that...

I vote we implement it.

Pro would be the ability to change the signatures and have those automatically display on ALL of the users posts.

Con would be that old posts would show 2 signatures.

What say you all?

By the way... one thing that would help is if you, as a user, go back a few posts and edit them, you could take out the old signature yourself... might be a fix for the more recent posts. A pain, though, if you have hundreds of posts.
