I just wanted to thank you agian WebDude for having this website and for allowing us to sell stuff for free.

I sold my Mille Lacs fish house this past weekend to some guys on this web site. I emailed web dude and try to send him some $, but he would not take it.

Thanks agian for your time and effort you put into this site.

Well... class act is debatable smile smiley As for money, I cannot take any from you guys and gals out there... it doesn't seem right. Don't get me wrong... I like money as much as the next person. In fact, last year, when I couldn't sell my house for 13 months and had 3 mortgage payments, I was seriously considering seeing if I could sell this site. I have had offers before and things got so bad that I was going to contact these people and see if they still were interested. I thank God that the house sold when it did... things seem to have gotten even worse. Now I am in my "rebuilding years!" crazy smiley crazy smiley

I do get emails occasionally, though, from people questioning the purpose of this site, why am I doing this, or what's the catch. I have responded to each of these pretty much the same way. In fact, I have a text document on my desktop that I can cut and paste pretty much as a template for these emails. Trust me, I get a lot of emails sent to me about this site... a lot of them scams, but legitimate ones too, so I gotta read them all. Seems some people think this site is some sort of scam. Not sure why. I am always trying to assure people that the only reason this site is here is for fun and the love of what I do. Hopefully people will realize why I am doing this. Also, maybe they will check here first so I don't have to keep responding to these.

The following is partially from a very old post so there might be some references to some things in the past, but it still fits pretty well. I have been using this as the boilerplate response to some of the emails I get. Just goes to show ya that we have kept the reason for being here on the right track...

Hello email person,

What's the catch?

This is hard question to answer, but I will give it a shot. Others have asked me what the deal is and I try give it to them straight...

I love to fish. I am also a Web Developer that started this site on the side in my spare time. I also love Minnesota. I have a vision (sounds kind of political, but what the heck, the elections are coming up) of having a very successful site that ordinary part time fishermen (and women) would opt to visit before they go out fishing. Or after fishing, a place to post (or boast) their catch on the forum or by sending me pictures.

I have been doing Web-Marketing so long that I decided to try a few tricks of the trade with this site to see if I could generate any interest. What better way to attract the average user then to get a bunch of pro-type people to use the forum or to post their catches. I scratched my head and decided to scour the search engines to find guides, resort owners and bait and tackle shops and add them to a database I built.

Now normally, it is fairly hard to get pro type people to post stuff or respond for that matter. A lot of them are already members of other forums or they have their own web sites ya da ya da ya da. So I decided to...
  • Build a search engine so people could access them quickly by lake, city or name.
  • Contact each one of them personally (better then all the bulk email crap going around) and tell them that they are being listed.
  • Let them link their sites from the photo pages or forum.
  • Try to get them to join the forum and post tips for us part-timers.

  • I have a bunch of guides already signed up, several resorts that are adding links to my site, and a few bait and tackle shops. You see, I am helping out these people by giving them free advertising and they in turn either tell a buddy, post some photos, add a link or join the forum or whatever. What I have started is just the tip of the iceberg.

I have approached this type of marketing professionally and have several sites that are ranking #1 in most all the search engines (google, msn, hotbot, yahoo, etc. etc. etc.). Search engines thrive on popular sites with lots of links coming and going. And this is the best way I could think of to get the ball rolling.

Now, the site is only a couple of months old and it is starting to rank well. I understand my competition (edited out some web sites here) and I understand this part of the business. Now try to project what this site could be in just a few years. If I can get a place where the pros go to post their stuff, where the resort owners go to post their stuff, and where the bait and tackle shops go to post their stuff, think of how popular this site could become. I mean, if you were an average fishermen and found out about a site that most of the pros in Minnesota go to for their posts, comments, fishing reports, weather conditions, what's hot and what's not, etc. etc. etc. wouldn't you want to hang out here too?

Anyway, I have a problem of getting really long winded. You don't have to believe me if you don't want to. I receive no monies from any party. All development is done on my own time at no cost to anyone but myself. I just had an urge to start something that I thought would be kind of cool. I mean, you fish right? (at least I think you do) And if you could do this in your spare time, and loved fishing the way I do, I think you would be doing the same.

I know several resort owners, and I know how difficult it can be to try to make it as an owner, especially in the Mill Lacs area and other lakes that are regulated. I don't know any bait shop owners or guides personally, but I bet a lot of them are in the same boat. So what better way to try to help then to offer something that I love to do... for free! I guess I am just trying to give a little back.

So in answer to your question... no, there is no "catch."

p.s. If you are still skeptical, that's okay. I do not plan on selling email lists, charging for search engine submissions, nor do I plan to delete any entries from the search engine unless I am asked to do so from the owners of the establishments. So if you
are listed in one of the search engines, just let it go at that and consider it free advertisement. If you wish to be removed, that is okay too, just send me an email and I will do so.

    Happy Fishing!

What I really would like and what would be a great reward would be to get some people to join. I have a vision of a user per lake. Not sure how many lakes there are, but I know there are well over 10,000. Just think! If I could get a weekly report for every lake in the state -- THAT WOULD BE AWSOME! grin smiley

I have been a member of this site since the beginning... before the great database crash of 2004. I know the birthday of the site is officially February 26th, 2004, but really the original site started in 2003. At that time, there were just a few fishing websites in Minnesota. All of them were commercial and along comes MFP, a totally different concept. A hobby site, just for fun. Well, a lot of these other sites got pretty ticked off. "Who is this guy and how does he have the gall to start something like this and not charge anyone for it!" This concept worked so well, that there were other sites that sprang up trying to emulate it. There were also other sites that tried to change their way of running their forums. MFP broke the mold of a highly controlled, dictatorship-like fishing site and changed the way a lot of the fishing sites are run today. Sure, the big commercial sites are still out there, still getting complaints and still big, but many sites, including the commercial ones, have opened up their forums for users to post critisisms, concerns, etc. In other words, they saw how fast this site expanded and they tried to hop on the bandwagon. But if you look closely at most of these other commercial sites, they do have an agenda. They do sell stuff and try to make a living off of their users. They say they are open, but try going on those sites and post a critisism of any of the products they sponsor... I bet you don't get very far.

Anyway, this is why I have stuck around here for so long. I really appreciate the forum that WebDude has put together. I totally agree with his concepts and the way this site is run. As far as I know, there have only been 2 users ever banned, and that was after repeated warnings. In fact the warnings went on for months before they actaully were banned. That's how tolerant, WebDude is. In fact, he really struggled with whether or not to ban these users and had the Moderators vote before he would take any action. And you will also notice that he usually has all of the users vote when he wants to make a change, or addition, or to change the direction of the site. Heck, the users actually wrote the Mission Statement for this site. You won't find another site out there like that!

Anyway, I also appreciate this site. I have been around for quite a while and I plan on sticking around into the future.

    Great website there, 'Dude!

    Well said Ted..

Webdude will not call himself a class act... just too nice a guy for that.

However, I think most all of us that have been on the site for a while will be more than glad to give those accolades to him.

    A class act? Absolutely!

I've said it many times before..but again, thanks Dude for providing such a fun and enjoyable site for us to be part of. It is greatly appreciated.

I agree wholeheartedly with both Ted and Fisher. With a little more work, this will become the place to go if you want any information on fishing in Minnesota...
