My buddy just got one of the GPS/Fishfinder units for X-mas and it had some nice lake maps on it. I'm looking for something similar, but in a handheld. Just want the GPS with lake maps. Anybody using anything or any recommendations that you could give. I've been doing some searching, but most of the software packages that contain the maps are spendy and only have a couple of hundred lakes on it.

Looking for handheld GPS for a few hundred bucks that will give me lake map availability with some level of contour detail.

Any thoughts or ideas ?

I am using the Lowrance i-Finder h2o. It runs Navionics Classic, Gold, HotMaps® electronic charts, Lowrance MapCreate and FreedomMaps mapping loaded on plug-and-play MMC or SD digital media memory cards. I have the black and white version but there is a color version out there too. You can buy a mount for your boat and it slides right in there. Also includes a 12-volt cigarette lighter plug power cable. The only thing that bugs me is it can take a few minutes to hit the satellites, especially indoors.

Of course, why would you use it indoors? I would assume you know where you are smile smiley

I am using the h2oc and find that it is a very useful tool...the one thing i would suggest if you do get one is to cover the viewing screen with some clear packing tape or similar product to save the screen from scratches cool smiley

Thanks for the replys. I stopped at Gander Mountain to do some more checking on this Friday night and the model that you've all talked about is exactly the one that I was looking at. The clerk working in the electronics department said that would also be his choice. It sounds like the color model is well worth the extra few dollars.

Do you know if your able to download information like moon phases, solunar tables and peak fishing/hunting times ? Anything additional that you can download on to these units other than mapping info such as additional utilities and such?

I too, have the H20 (black and white). I have never put a lake chip in it, but I do use it to mark spots so I can get back on them quick. I probably have about 30 spots marked on various lakes and it's nice to be able to get back to them via the gps. My unit is a couple of years old so I am not sure of any new bells or whistles that may have been added. No solunar info as far as I know. I've talked to some that have the lake chips and they really like them. I also have the mount on the boat so I can just slip it right in there. The only problem I have with the unit is the face plate got rubbed against something while in the glovebox of the boat and left what almost looks like a fog mark. I've tried rubbing it out, but I can't seem to get rid it. Since the unit is sealed (that's why they call it the H20) it might be a pain to get a new face. I've contemplated sending it back to the factory and having it repaired, but I never got around to it. Still works great, just hard to see in about 1/4 of the bottom-right viewing area. Since that happened, I've been wrapping it in a small towel everytime I transport it and have had no other problems. I wish there was a carrying case for transporting it. Once that plate gets marked up, it's a devil of a time getting it cleaned back up.

Yep the H20C is the ticket, if you want the weather go with the expedition. this also comes with a MP2 player and holds 1000 more waypoints.
let us know on your decision.
