Ice conditions Update: 12/26/07

12/26/07
I hope everyone had a merry Xmas. I was out again this morning checking, and the ice is still only 8 to 9 inches, up to 12 inches. It is still a lot like; well the easiest visual would be like driving on a waffle. Way too inconsistent for my me. The couple of slush spots that were out there heal over just fine the past few days.

We only ended up with 2 inches of snow yesterday, so that was a good thing, but we are supposed to get some more on Friday. It is snowing lightly as we speak. Maybe a 1/2 inch or so.The snow that is out there has shrunk down quite a bit, but there are some areas with 9 or more inches of snow. I will hopefully be plowing a road on Friday. If not, it will be Monday.

Still only 4 wheelers and sleds for this weekend. I will try to get a couple of my smaller 4 hole houses out sometime this weekend if we do not get the snow on Friday. From what I am hearing, most of the resorts are sitting with the same conditions as we are. There is going to be a lot of weight on the ice, if we get any more snow. Then we will be dealing with flooding conditions, which is what is already going on with the roads that have been plowed off around the lake. It just can not support all that weight with it being at 8 to 10 inches.

We will see what the next few nights will bring us for ice. It is the hurry up and wait season. It will come. It will be be another 1st of the year gig again this season. Do not even think about driving anywhere on the main lake just yet. Way to spooky rite now. It is not worth your life! That is all I have to say about that!

Be safe

We will see ya

When we see ya

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. I was considering a day trip up to Mille Lacs for some early evening fishing. Can anyone provide me with an up-to-date report and a suggested demarcation point for me and my 4-wheeler?

Ok then. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum, fishgood. Wow, registered almost a year ago and finally getting around to posting, huh?

Mille Lacs is pretty big, considering your question. There are hundreds of places to fish. Can you narrow down what part of Mille Lacs your looking to? You got the flats and Hunters Road. NE of Isle. Eddys on the southwest side. Rocky Reef to the southeast. Macs Twin Bays. Hawkbill. Garrison reef. Wigwam Bay. 7 Mile. Twin Pines. Brandts. Cove Bay. Liberty Beach.

Most of these might be plowed. Some you have to get permission to use the plowed roads from the resorts. Mille lacs is a big lake and there are lots of options...

Sorry if I couldn't be more of a help to you.

Just got off the dead sea (mile lacs) fishing well some good and a lot of the bad i ended up going out of cove bay just to try some thing a little different fished in 13-15 feet off water using many different lures and colors ..
for the ones who are using wheelers this weekend watch out for the slush pockets they are out there ..

on another note when you find out where you are going to fish DO NOT clean the snow away ! i found out the hard way i had about 3"-4" of water in my house it's best to just drill then see how much water you are sitting in ..
the guys i was fishing with today were great they are from Minnesota great outdoors.com they did ended up catching a couple nice pike in the 38" range using big fat heads..

Thanks for the updates, I normally watch the postings, but rarely feel the need to provide content. I guess I don't have anything good to report most of the time. Young children and a steady job make my fishing trips few and far between.

On top of that I normally keep my fishing to Leech, URL and on occasion Winny; but its early ice this year and I don't have a lot going on at work so I thought I would stroll over to Mille Lacs for a little driving around and sit on some fishes for the afternoon before the kids come home.

I'm considering the southeast end near Isle as my point of entry. Its only 40 minutes from my house and gets me to fish quickly.

Life is good!

Ok, so I hopped in the truck and headed up to Mille Lacs. Went out near Isle at some place that begins with an "L" but I can't remember. I marked a lot of fish on the Vexilar, but they didn't seem to like my minnow very much. Had three beers, and fished for about three hours. No fish but it was a nice evening on the ice. The water came up about 3 inches above the hole. Someone mentioned not to shovel the snow away from the hole. That was an excellent idea. My feet stayed on top of the slush and it worked well...slow again at work today, but the wife has asked me to clean the house and get ready for company. Major bummer.
