So this is the year that Ratboy (aka Quinn Age:9 Live weight: 45lbs soaking wet!) wants to step up to the big league and Deer Hunt.
Yes, I was thinking the same thing! I am going to need duct tape to hold this kid down in the stand.

None the less my son wants to hunt and dang it I am going to bring him!

He has now participated in the endless clearing of trails and the strategic setting up of stands. He has asked more questions about deer hunting then I knew was even possible.

None the less my son wants to hunt and dang it I am going to bring him!

Last Tuesday evening I decided that I need to bring him to a stand and start covering the whole aspect of sitting still. So off we head to the closest stand to the house. It is a small 12ft ladder stand the covers a small patch of oaks out to a hay field. I get the asked the same 20 questions by the young man on the way there and I give him the same 20 answers. I keep telling him that when I get back from hunting I only tell him about the highlights of the trip and there is allot of waiting that happens in the woods. You have to be very patient and still so the deer do not recognize that something is out of place. Anyway we are now at the stand and I am showing him how to climb up and position yourself. Just as I turn around in the stand and sit down a beautiful 8 point buck steps out into the hay field no more than 80 yards away! I couldn't believe my eyes! I quickly scurried down the stand and told Ratboy to get up there so he could see him. He went right up the stand as he was taught and stood there looking at the buck. Yep, he looked down the ladder at me
and said "If it was deer season could we shoot that one?" oh yeah we could shoot that one son. Well it didn't take long and that buck finally spotted him and headed out. Ratboy came down with that look in his eye like Huh nothing to this deer hunting stuff. Of course I started the same old it never happens like that when its deer season.......

None the less my son wants to hunt and I am gong to bring him!

This past Sunday is another ritual around our house. Our house becomes "Deer Camp"! Things turn from lovely flowers to Blaze Orange. Once again Ratboy is in full hunting mode! He wants to go out one last time and sit in the actual stand that we will be sitting in on opening morning. That's pretty tough to argue with so my oldest son Codi decides to give the TV a break and come with also. We load up on the wheelers and head back to the stand. When we get to the stand we cover the 20 question thing and he climbs up with me right behind him. Once again I get to the top and turn around and sit. Just as I reach the seat I look to my right and there is another 8 point buck standing no more than 40 yards from the stand! I quickly point it out to Ratboy and he sees him immediately. The buck is young and you can almost tell he is looking for love. I motion to my oldest on the ground to stay still. I start calling to the buck and his interest is peaked almost immediately. He doesn't come any closer but has no idea were or what we are. I now motion to my oldest to start walking down the 4-wheeler trail. Codi starts walking down the trail and gets within 20 yards of the buck (another thing that will rarely happen in 1 week). The both look at each other and and the young buck raises his head at him. Codi grabs a stick and cracks it against the tree next to him. The buck raises his head again at him! That's when Codi took off running back to Dad like a streak of (insert word here). Well the shriek that Codi let out also scarred the buck and he took off running the other way. This was all viewed by myself and my new hunter in training atop our stand. Yep, I got the same look as before from the young lad.

None the less my son wants to hunt and I am going to bring him!

Ratboy has spent a total of 15 minutes on stand and has seen two 8 point bucks including one that scarred the B-Gezzers out of his older brother. How am I ever going to top this on opening day?
