It was cold. Most people out were catching fish, but most fish I saw were small. The slabs were probably a little skittish because of the weather. I heard the winner was caught off a dock and weighed 2 lb 4 oz. Didn't see it though, so I cannot confirm this or not.

I think that is about right, my friend saw the crappie and said "it looked like a crappie on steriods!" I hope it wasn't a crappie that someone raised in a fish-tank because that has happended before in the Crappie contest

Does anyone have any general thoughts or feelings about the crappie contest this year?

For 10 years a group of us have gotten together to do the "first boat fishing of the season", then went to Fletchers for the raffles and cameraderie. This year we stayed away because the last 2 years seemed to have really gone down hill. (we went north and did our own this year)

Any thoughts?

Hi OTL3,

Welcome to My Fishing Pals. Hope to hear more from you in the future.

I have never done the tournament. In fact, besides some friendly side bets with my buddies, I don't do tournaments so I can't help you there.

The prize for me is just being out on the water.

Fred, my dad and I enjoyed the fishing contest on Minnetonka very much. We caught about 13 keeper size crappies. It was super cold in the am as we were on the lake at 5am. It was a good time with the other boats out and such. Towards about 12pm or so the fishing literally stopped though. It was super windy that day and our boat was whipping in the wind even with a strong anchor. We went to Lord Fletchers and did the see the monster size crappie. I don't know the exact size but I saw all the fish caught and there were 2 in particular that were a pretty good size. Talk about fillets man. I was hungry for certain looking at those two. I've actually never seen a crappie that large before except in the fishing movies. LOL Fred and I were watching this InFisherman video he has on catching crappies so we didn't do half bad fishing for them that day. We made off with more than some did that day. It waS a good time just windy. I dropped my phone in Minnetonka that day too... pretty slick of me huh? LOL On our way in from Lord Fletchers to the launch the waters on Minnetonka actually had whitecaps on them believe it or not. Crazy chaotic waters. We actually went in early that day just due to the wind and the horrible water conditions. It was a good time overall just a bit windy. Can you all believe we've had a sprinkle of snow lately? Snow on tulips just seems wrong to me. Heard it's supposed to be nice out this weekend. Fred and I are ready to take the boat out again. Should be a good time. I'll let you all know how it goes. I'm sure it'll be Minnetonka again or maybe Eagle lake.
Take care guys!

Hi all. Yea this is Fred. Karen an I went out for the Crappie contest on Minnetonka. The conditions weren't as bad as Karen discribed (if your in the dry side of the boat). I have a smaller boat 16' 9" Alumicraft with a 25hp Merc. Karen sat in front while I did the work on the throttle and took most of the water. The water was a bit choppy for a smaller boat, and there were some white caps. We did well in the sheltered bays (Seton), and landed almost two limits for two people. Our fish were in the 4 oz. to 6 oz. range. Not near enough to compete, but plenty to fry. They bit on White 1/64 Flu-Flu's with a Yellow skirts, tipped with a crappie minnows, suspended on a small slip bobber at the appropriate depth. Karen's dad didn't do well at all, because he was too proud to fish next to his daughters boyfriend who had been fishing that lake for years (he was in his own boat and followed us). I have to admit, he sported a brand new Lund Tyee with all the fixin's. I lay awake at night wishin' I had that boat. At least I showed my woman who could bring home the fish. That had to count for somethin'.
