Yes it was time to give Big Sandy a change!
I went out on Saturday with the family loaded in the boat and the rods rigged with 1oz bottom bouncers
and tied off with floating rapala's. I was convinced I was going to find walleyes deep! Why, because that's
what the text book tells you to do in late July when its scorching hot out. Once again someone forgot to
tell Good Ole Big Sandy to follow the rules. I really wanted to convince myself I could catch walleyes on
something different on this lake but I guess I will have to try something different next week. We trolled at
1.7 MPH and let between 100 and 200 feet of line out. Nothing, Zip, Zilch! But this is what we did find out.
My eldest being 14 and full of piss and vinegar bet me $5 bucks at the bar in quarters if he jumped out
of the boat and could pass the boat swimming at 1.7 MPH. Of course I wanted to keep him in shape for
the football season so I gladly said your on! That turkey head jumped out and had the boat passed in
about 15 seconds! It was like he was chasing a video game across the water! I don't think I will be allowed
to forget that one for awhile. Needless to say I regrouped on Sunday and the wind picked up a bit and I
was out there and back on tract! First pass landed 4 keep able walleyes and they were all caught in
7 to 8 foot of water! Lots and lots of 8 to 9 inch fish! Which to me is great because I am still catching.
2 guys approx. 20 fish and we kept 6 in the 14 to 18 inch range. Size one hammered brass on 10ft
hand tied lindys. I am truly beginning to think 10am till 1pm is the best time to fish Big Sandy.
On a side note I was able to finally meet up with FISHEYE on Sunday just before I was packing up to
go home. He is a great guy and hope to share the boat with him soon!

BooberDown this up coming weekend is the official Girls weekend were I get to drive them around the
lake while they giggle like school girls! I am instructed to not say a word just "Drive". What time you
going to be at the dock I will do a drive by!

Good luck to you next weekend. I might suggest getting head phones and just tuning in the Twins game, hopefully that will help you keep your mouth shut, you just might stand a chance then.

SandBurr,
Did you try slowing down below 1.7 mph ?
sometimes that does help too.. wink smiley

when i had my big boat i liked speeds around .5 to 1 mph for deep water walleyes deeper you go the slower you try to go give it a shot and let us know how it goes..

Well SB, sorry to hear you didn't get that many fish. We did really good this weekend we went out saturday and sunday and just hammered the walleye. I convienced my brother-in-law to try some different spots so we drove around looking for some, and boy did we ever find some good ones. smile smiley He said we where over by goat island confused smiley we trolled around it a few times and came home with nice keeppers both days. We also hit some back out of the way bays and I hit the crappies big time. took home 8 big monsters. smile smiley We did try the same old spots with no luck mad smiley

I'll back up in 2 weeks to hit the new spots again, maybe I'll see you out there. cool smiley

Thanks for the report, Scum... Oh, and you too, SB smile smiley

By the way, I have never caught a deep water 'eye on BS. I've tried... I've even seen them in Bill Horn. But I have never got them to bite. I think on BS they come up and cruise the rockpiles when feeding. That's why they are usually caught there.

Now northerns... that's a different story. The pile out in front of our cabin can be interesting. I've drifted off that trying for 'eyes and as soon as I hit 20 to 25 feet... wham... a northern. Not always the case, but I've noticed some nice toothies around the deeper edges of that pile.

Dont get me wrong. When I went back to my standard way of fishing we did catch fish! wink smiley I just wanted to switch it up and try something different. I did notice that there were more fisherman this last weekend then I have seen all year! I could hardly believe it when I rounded the corner out of bridge road and there were boats everywhere. shocked smiley

Ice, I guess I always thought I needed to keep the speed up to get the action out of the cranks? Can you expand on your theory of going slower with them? What I did is I stuck them over the side untill I visually saw the movement I wanted and I logged the speed on the gps. Maybe I need to look at that trolling book everyone talks about. confused smiley

Web, I am with you on your theorys! Maybe this weekend I give the toothy critters a shot!
