I bought this 6'6" 1 piece graphite rod at L&M this afternoon at around 5:15 pm....by 5:45 the thing was already broken..it split just over the middle with like the sound of a twig snapping..

I like Shakespeare rods, and still use a Durango model that I've had for years all the time (I switched to it after the breakage) I'm pretty sure L&M will just refund or exchange.. but do I really want to exchange it for the same Synergy rod? I mean sheesh.. I was only throwing 1/4 oz Matsuo poured soft plastics....

They have a one year warranty against defects but it would cost $10 to invoke the warranty and that's not worth it on a $17 purchase obviously.

with the Shakespeare name, I figured I was safe at $17... but anyway .. I emailed them asking about the graphite rods.

I say use what ever you have confidence in.
If you have confidence in the $17 rod then by all means use it, if you need to spend more to have confidence then spend it.

Confidence in your gear is important in my opinion.

I've used a lot of Shakespeare rods over the years. They are also what the kids each get during our fishing class.

The rods I however prefer are Pflueger. Same company as Shakespeare, but the IM 8's have been awesome. I like the President model,

For a slightly less expensive model, the Echelon is also a decent rod and reel.

If you want some rods that just don't seem to break and are super sensitive though, you'll have to spend a lot more. For tournaments I still use a few President Pflueger, but also have a few custom Pickwick Rods made with St. Croix blanks and a few Kistler Customs.
