Well, I achieved what I wanted to this weekend. Got the boat out, checked all the pumps and electronics, bombed around the lake a bit, then settled down for some fishing.

Woodtic and I hit the north end in two shallow bays. I had along my two youngest too. What a blast. We caught about 50 fish, mostly crappies. Some sunnies, bass and perch too. Some of the crappies and sunnies were pretty nice slabs. Only put 10 in the bucket, but they were good sized ones. We used crappie minnows primarily and a few small leeches. Plain long shanked, gold hooks with bobbers. We fished in about five to seven feet of water for about six hours.

We were taking a chance 'cause I never fished this lake before. I decided that this year I was going to get out on some foreign waters to see if I could expand my "known territories." What was really nice is that it was only 30 minutes from my house.

Had to wait a while to get the boat in. A lot of people must have had the same idea as me. It was typical of a Metro lake. One of the reasons why I gave up fishing locally, originally.

What was really great was my 8 year old daughter. Mom was out of town and the daughter did not want to go. She "...hated fishing!" I couldn't find someone to take care of her, so I told her she had to go. She was ticked and bummed.

AND to make matters worse, I forgot her "Barbie Rod!" She got that evil eye from her mother, I am sure. So I gave her one of my open face rigs.

When she lit into the crappies though, her whole attitude changed. You got to remember, she is very feminine and would not touch a leech or minnow to save her life, much less get her hands dirty.

Well... to make a long story a bit shorter, by the end of the day, she was baiting her own hook, casting like a pro, and suggesting different points we should fish because she thought the structure looked right. Folks, I've created a monster. When we went in for a potty break, she insisted we be quick because daylight was burning and we had to get back on the water. She was catching a lot of fish in a "honey hole" she found about 30 feet from the boat when another boat with couple of guys pulled in on her spot and started fishing. "Dad! They stole my spot!" she complained. "Well, we don't own the lake," I said. She kept fishing that spot, throwing her stuff and pulling crappies from right under their boat. They stayed there about a half hour and got nothing. I think they were a bit miffed.

All in all, a very fine day it was. Weather was nice and we were catching fish. The daughter caught the largest, the son caught a lot too. I think he was a little put off by his sister, but when your catchin' 'em, who cares?

Thanks for the bait Woodtic!

It's always nice when the kids catch fish. It's really what gets them started on something that can be very addicting. A good addiction for a change!

Cute story Webdude! What lake did you say it was? I hate to ask, in case ur not up for sharing. :-) Did you say bald eagle? Is that the name of the lake? Our fishing has been alright but interested in some other hot spots.
Good to hear you got out and ur ready for the season!

Yeah, Bald Eagle. I got a map in the Lake Maps section of the site if you want to check it out. It is located a little north of White Bear.

WOOT! Go girl! I wish my kids' weekend of fishing would have been more productive. We were on Elk Lake and my kids were subjected to Dad's muffled grumbling about his X67C not working and watching him PULL START a 115hp outboard so they could all go potty! The trolling motor wasnt gonna get us there in time....lol

I need a lake to catch fish on!

Wanted to bring up this old thread again. Gonna do the same thing this year. The 8 year old is now a 9 year old who is a pro with her own openface ("...the Barbie Rod is a little emabarrasing, Dad!").

Sure am getting the itch... kids too!

Hey Webdude!

Was Bald Eagle completely open and free of ice? Or was there still patches on the south side?

Ya gotta look at the date this was posted... 04/17/05. Last year at that time, there was no ice... nothing. I am going to assume that it will be the same this year.

Oh,

You had my hopes up. I just heard from sea_nymph that Bald Eagle was still 7/8 covered with ice.
