Cloudy, 46 degrees air temp, 53 degrees water temp, breezy, damp

We are experiencing your typical New England weather that is made for a duck. We have not had much experience yet this spring with warm weather as the folks in the Midwest are having. Temps are still in the upper 40’s with cloudy and threatening rain and this week coming still temps only around 60. We will probably skip spring this year and go right into summer but as long as we can wet a line we are still going fishing. Took my son for a walk around a local pond and he and I tried for some fish from shore but they weren’t cooperating. He was having more fun throwing branches and rocks into the water and that is fine with me as long as he is enjoying some time in the outdoors that is all that matters. He is really getting into taking long walks and I really have been enjoying this as he always wants to walk in the woods now.

Sunday morning came and the weather was still the same, but the boat is all tuned up and ready to go so weather didn’t matter at this time. There are three ponds that I frequent the most closest to home and one was closed due to high water, one had a tournament going on so I ventured to the smallest one. I arrived and there was nobody there so was kind of nice for the first trip of the year to work any bugs out of the boat. Water temps are around the mid 50’s but this lake for bass doesn’t really turn on until the temps are a little higher. Decided to use the panfish equipment and was not disappointed one bit as the fish are actively into their spawning times and finding them wasn’t too difficult. The areas that I found that had fish in them they were separated quite a bit by species. Two of the three areas were loaded with sunfish, as the third area was loaded with crappies. One small bass was caught as well as a nice 15 inch rainbow trout. The trout made it to the boat but as I was trying to get a hold of it, the 2 pound test line snapped and back into the lake it went. Really wanted to get a photo of this fish as it was very colorful and gave a good fight as well. The bait of choice was only one today, Loby Baits – Drag-n-Mag. I fished the Drag-n-Mag about 3 feet under a cork and proved to be a deadly combination as crappies, sunfish, bass, trout and perch were caught in the few hours that I was out there. Had a very enjoyable first outing in the big boat and kind of nice to be out of the kayak for a change and fish a little more comfortable. Season is underway now and time to start targeting bass and get the fishing times rolling. Get out there and wet a line and enjoy what the great outdoors has to offer us anglers….

Thank you CK and I hope that others are able to get some information out of my posts so that it helps them when they are out on the water....
