Went out to do some shore fishing this evening in the south metro. We started on Orchard Lake but the spot we wanted to fish had to much wind blowing right in our faces to make fishing worth the effort.

We switched to plan B and hit Crystal Lake.

In general everything was slow. Ended up with one small bass and one even smaller Sunfish. I planned on going old school with just a plain old worm but opted for crappie minnows instead. Both fish came on a small crappie minnow and plain hook, they wanted nothing to do with anything else.

Couple other guys where out there as well and there were atleast a half dozen boats scattered around the lake. A few guys in one boat were trolling most of the time. Not really sure what they were going for.

The water seems to be a bit on the cool side yet so we tried to get into a little deeper water which is where we found our fish and a few other light bites. Seemed 10-12 feet was the best. Shouldn't be long now until we get them coming in shallower.

The night ended with a little excitement however. As I was reeling in for the last time for the night around 7:45 I had a muskie take a big swipe at my crappie minnow and small jig head. It wasn't huge maybe 30ish range but it was in 2 feet of water right along shore. It took a big swipe and had half its body come out of the water as it turned back. Just enough to get the heart pumping as I didn't see it until it came out of the water, it startled me pretty good.

I've had some good luck on bass there, biggest was about 5-6 lbs, it was a hog for sure.

Some decent crappie at times. It use to have bigger northern back in the early to mid 90's but they seem to all be gone now and replaced with hammer handles.

I hope they had some spinners on and were targeting Crappie.

Orchard has some pretty nice Walleyes also.

We hit up Lake Minnetonka last night and caught a couple Crappies, Sunnies, a Bass and a Dog Fish. Not sure on the water temp, but we did ok on small jigs and soft plastics. I think we were in about 4-8 ft of water, again no depth finder, so it's a guess. Sorry I didn't get the pics on the puter yet.

I've seen a few walleye come out of Orchard during early ice but thats about it. Seems not alot of people target them in there.

If I had a boat Orchard would probably be a lake I would try to learn a little more, not as much boat pressure as you see on other lakes in that area.

I actually caught everything except that one, our freind grrbrr, had the doggy, at least we think that's what it was. I looked like a dog fish, but it didn't have any scales, more like a pout. Anybody know if Tonka has pout in it? To be honest it didn't make it in the boat it just rolled at the side and spit the hook out. We didn't even have to touch it! And yes he had a good fight with it!
