My fellow fishermen,

Each year my entire clan go up by Bemidji for our 4th of July vacation, my brother and his family, sister and hers, me and mine, and mom. Anyhow, we have a boys vs girls fishoff on Thursday. None of us are very good at fishing, but the girls have won the last 4 years. We dont even come close. To make a long story short, I need some tips that even a guy from Nebraska can use. Northern seem to be the easiest to catch, so we just troll the bull rushes with an assortment of spoons and crank baits. Any help you can give would be great. Remember, I know next to nothing about fishing.

thanks

Spinner baits. Top water frogs in the weeds.. Those are your best bet. just my 2 cents.

Ahhhhh... the old "why do the women outfish us" blah, blah blah. Well, I don't know why. Maybe they smell nicer!

But seriuosly, I used to do a lot of northern fishing and if you are going for size, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.

A northern will eat bait up to 1/3 its own size. That means a 9 lb. northern will eat bait up to 3 lbs. That's a big hunk of fish! Also, I have found that even though the weeds are a good place to catch a quantity of northerns, most of what you catch there are small. Why? Because that's where the smaller ones hide out from the bigger ones. A large northern has no fear of being eaten.

The biggest northerns I have caught are usually on flats on the edges of the weed beds. They will cruise up and down the edges looking for bait that had wandered out of the weeds. So, keeping this in mind, I would go to the bait store and get those big suckers or heavy pike minnows that are about eight to ten inches long, hook 'em just under the lips so they stay alive and can swim around, use a big bobber, and cast it out beyond points of weeds on the flats.

If you don't want to go the live bait route, I have always had good luck casting a red and white daredevil. I have even caught northerns on those daredevils that people think are a joke because they are so big, but I have caught the most fish using the ones that are about 4 inches long (not counting the hooks).

Anyway, I hope this helps. You won't catch as many fish as in the weeds, but I bet the fish you catch will be bigger. Once in a while, if you hit the right spot and they are turned on, you can pull 3 or 4 eight to ten pounders out of the lake. Maybe this year you will win the trophy from those women who always seem to catch more fish.

Go, Big Red!

Best of luck with your trip, and I hope you catch a ton of big Northerns. Actually, I hope I catch a ton of big Northerns myself this year, my first year in Minnesota.

I've got a nice collection of those big red 'n white Daredevls, and I'm taking no prisoners.

Take it from me (PJPIKE) - If you want to catch Pike, I've always done good with Mepps Lures. (Yellow or White) Get the bigger ones, (But not the musky lures) cast towards shore & the Northern Pike cannot resist. These Pike are kind of stupid. Pike will attack almost any lure if casted in the right spot. It just takes a little time. In a fishing contest (if measured by length & weight only), I could gaurantee you that with the right lures, you could win the family contest...
