I think this is a question for the Dude! I use cable and love it, but I think both have advantages and disadvantages. You just need to talk to someone who is knowledgable in both to decribe the differences between them. I like my cable.

Here's the skinny...

Cable is much faster then DSL. It is also more expensive. I have a DSL line into my home that costs $25 per month. I think, if I remember correctly, after the promotion, a cable hookup would have cost about $50. If you do not have cable service already, they will charge you extra to run a line in.

Disadvantage to cable is that it is shared. In other words, the more people in your area that are currently using it, the slower it gets. Still, it probably is faster then a DSL line. DSL, on the other hand, is a dedicated line that rides on your phone line and the bandwidth is always the same.

The best deal you can get, whether you use DSL or cable, is to bundle all of your services together. So if you went with, let's say, Qwest for DSL, get the package that has DSL, phone, and cable TV all in one bundle. If you go with, let's say, Comcast, do the same. Bundle the phone, cable TV and Internet cable all in one bundle. I believe if you go with Comcast, you get all long distance phone calls within the continental U.S. for free. Comcast is still more expensive, though. Not sure what the bundled prices are for either right now. You can usually get a promotion that will give you all 3 for X amount for 6 months if you sign a year contract, then you are going to have to pay the full amount.

Hope this helps!

Is it true that the farther away from the main DSL hub the slower it is?

You won't be able to tell the difference. If you are looking at just speed, I would go with the cable.
