Sunny to Partly Cloudy 35 degrees air temp 12 inches of ice Slight breeze
As the week is starting to wind down with the kids being off for winter break, decided to hit my lake for a quick couple of hours first thing in the morning. There wasn't anyone else on the lake and I haven't been to the lake in the early morning so didn't know what the bite was going to be like.
It is impossible to get any reading through the ice now with my Vexilar as this lake has some snow cover and we are experiencing slush pockets under the top layer of ice. Found an area that had a bunch of old holes and was able to drill these open with my Jiffy Jet hand drill and check the area out.
Wasn't seeing much action but found one hole that had some activity and started fishing there. I drilled another hole on either side of this and was able to get both of my lines showing on the Vexilar and was working the Loby Baits at one level and T.H.E. Jig at another level.
By doing this I was able to cover better area's of the water column and catch the fish that were coming through. The fish were located on the bottom and the nicer Crappies were coming from 5 feet under the ice. The depth of water in this area was 17 feet and had fish at the bottom, 5 feet off of the bottom and 5 feet under the ice.
When they would come through it was hard keeping two lines going as they were crushing both of the baits. As things started to slow down I had started punching other holes as well and was getting fish in each of them. It all depended if I were to get to the hole at the right time and they were going through.
Didn't catch a huge number of fish but caught enough to get my fix for the day and then head off to spend more time with the kids. Friday is kids day so there won't be any fishing for me today.
People who fish for food, and sport be damned, are called pot-fishermen. The more expert ones are called crack pot-fishermen. All other fishermen are called crackpot fishermen. This is confusing. ~ Ed Zern, 1947
