Hello, my name is Tyler and I am from Kansas City. Some friends and I are planning a fishing trip to Minnesota at the end of May. We were planning on going all the way up to Ely, but my father-in-law doesn’t want to ride in a car for 10 hours.

Can anyone suggest a lake farther south? We want to take our own boat with a 125hp motor. We would like to get into some Muskie, but were not picky as long as they are biting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

If you want Muskie and you want to cut some time off your drive I would head to Mille Lacs. It is probably one of the best muskie lakes in the state and you have the chance at a state record fish.

It is also a GREAT walleye lake and smallmouth bass lake. There is endless places to fish and lots of resorts to stay at.

It is about 2 hours north of the Twin Cities metro area.

Just my 2 cents anyways.

Unfortunately you won't be able to Fish for Muskies in Minnesota until June 2 or Bass until May 26 on Lake Mille Lacs, Walleye and Pike you can target May 12 in which case Nofish's suggestion of Lake Mille Lacs would be great.
That being said the ELY area of Minnesota is an incredible place with lot's of Lakes to choose from and it's only 2 1/2 hours past Mille Lacs.
The only problem I see with coming that early in the season is the water is still pretty cold and the Fishing can be hit or miss.

Maybe some Ely area guy's will chime in here.

Good Luck and Welcome to My Fishing Pal's.....

Good point PB, I am not a muskie guy so I forgot the later season opener.

It seems my best fishing of the year is always in early to mid june. Before that can be real good as well but like you said it can be hit or miss.

Thanks for the info. We had to back the trip up a week so I hope it's more hit than miss.

Next year we are planning on going to Ely for a full week.

I will let you know what we decide for this trip.

Early June is a great time to fish. It's not too hot out & the fish are really active.

If you are fishing for a week straight you should catch fish that time of the year. even then there will be days here or there that the weather might shut the fish down but not usually for a week straight. You should be able get a good bite figured out with a little work. Let us know where you end up going I am sure we can help you get a game plan before you get there.

OK, we have picked May 25th to the 27th to go to Mille Lacs lake. We just need to find a place to stay. I have searched and found some resorts on line and I was wondering if any of you have had any good or bad experiences at these or any other resorts on the lake.

Appeldoorn’s Sunset Bay Resort
Rocky Reef Resort
Fisher’s Resort

And any tips on getting into the big Muskie would also be appreciated.
