Sunny Skies 38 degrees air temps Breezy Light coating of snow Ice 6-7 inches thick
Well the ice season has finally gotten underway here in New England and my lake has a good solid 6-7 inches of clear ice. There were numerous folks on the ice: fishing, playing hockey, football and general ice skating. Looks like everyone is finally enjoying being able to get out onto the ice for some winter activities.
My daughter has never been ice fishing and wanted to get out there and give it a try. After getting her convinced that she is safe to walk on the ice we walked across the bay to where I had been catching numerous slabs with my kayak only a couple weeks beforehand. All of the folks that were fishing were in the shallower water and not one soul was in this deep water hole.

Using the Vexilar and checking all around before starting to drill, I was starting to notice right away that there were not many signs of the schools of slabs that I had been experiencing catching not long ago.
After checking around 10 places I finally came across a spot that had some activity just off the bottom. So I grabbed my NEW Jiffy Jet 6 hand drill and started cutting holes. Got the house set up and rigged up my girl and time to sit and watch and see what we are going to catch.

Today was a very tough day and not totally sure why as the pressure wasnt bad but two days previous there was a major cold front that came through and may have shut them down. There were fish on the locator and they would look at the bait, but were reluctant to take a bite of my Lobys Maki bait. On the other rod we were using T.H.E. Jig and went all the way down to the 1/100 oz version and couldnt entice them with this either.
As I kept changing through my Loby Baits, the first fish I caught, which was the nicest, was caught on the Mousi in a white color. Only caught a couple on this bait and then tried the Micro Flei and and caught a couple small sunnies and crappies. I was starting to see that I would need a very small bait and ended with the Loby Polli that caught a few more crappies.

One thing that was very apparent with this tough and finicky bite was that the size was very small. Of all of the times that I fished there with my kayak, I never once caught any fish that were 5-6 inches long and other then a couple goods one early, these were all that we were catching. Thankfully we were catching something but for my daughters first time out I was hoping to stick a bunch of nice slabs. I can tell that things are going to be different now that the ice is there and fishing may be tougher, but we will figure them out. She was having much more fun just playing on the ice and enjoying pretending to be a dancer and skater. She is ready to go again and that is great especially after a tough day. She had numerous bites, but with them biting so lightly and not even moving the spring bobber, made it tough for her. She will get it and will be slaying them soon enough, she is very persistent.
