With the cold setting in we should be able to drive on most all lakes very soon. I've seen trucks on most lakes ,but most guy's 4 wheel it or walk or sled it out.

Alot of the metro lakes I want to fish were still partly open up to this last weekend. They won't be drivebale for a long while yet.
Some guys are fishing some of these lakes still and are sitting in portables just yards away from open water. Thats just not for me thank you.

A blurb from that article:
The worst part about that one is the same guy went through the ice in the same spot with his ATV just a week before, said Dale Ebel, Duluth area conservation officer for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. He thought it had been cold enough to make the ice thicker. But its been so warm that were actually losing ice.
Amazing. A Darwin Award winner for sure.

The guy going through on Island lake actually made national news on the weather channel last night. The weather people just ranted about how no lake is safe in Minnesota and that no one should be on them.
I guess they had no info about the actual lake. Island Lake is a resivoir and the ice is notorious for bad ice. On a normal year most people avoid driving on the lake the entire season. It really iritates me how news programs will see one car go through and label every lake unsafe for any sort of travel. Each lake is different and needs to be judged independently. Other lakes in Duluth have 9 solid inches of ice, not safe to drive on yet but they are great for ATV's or foot travel.

I'm with you NF. They are ignorant. For example the WCCO ad says You know your a Minnesotan when you go fishing in 40 below to get fish when you could go to the supermarket for the same thing.
1st off who in the world fishes in 40 below 0? Noone. 2nd do they really think that a fish tastes the same 1-2 weeks later as it does straight out of the lake.Fish meat breaks down quicker than any other meat. 3rd they need to make news so if someone happens to go in "oh my all all lakes are so unsafe." That hurts our sport. Why not educate people with facts not hype & scare tactics.

Well I guess if we all want to look at the bright side if the news scares away some people from going out onto the lakes that means more fish for the rest of us.
And I haven't been fishing in 40 below but I have been out in near 30 below weather once or twice. No shelter either. It was a little chilly but we caught some fish so it helped keep us warm.

Lake closings January 2007
Updated 01/04/2007
The list below shows lakes that have been officially closed by county sheriff's departments to vehicle use. Even in a "normal" winter, ice can vary greatly on the same lake. This winter is even more unpredictable, and some lakes in the central and southern part of the state have developed open water areas - despite freezing temperatures. Everyone who ventures out on the ice needs to use extreme caution, check locally before heading out on any lake and avoid nighttime travel.
For questions regarding any closed waters, please contact the local county sheriff's office.
Closed lakes Closed to cars & trucks only Rainy Lake - Koochiching County Closed to all vehicles (Incl. Snowmobiles & ATVs): none
