Basically I'm saying.. Webdude could make a decent amount of $$ from MyFishingPals while still keeping this site 100% free for all of us.

sportsnut218,

Maybe someday. As I have said in the past, I have been contacted by some fairly big manufacturers about banner ads. Most notably would be Smoker Craft and Alumnicraft and I have Google ads on some of my other sites for other clients. Not sure at this point where this is going. I do know something, though. As the user base builds, the worth of the site increases. We'll see what happens. I am not sure I want to lock into any type of sponsorship and if I do, I am gonna make it so it does not affect the forums in any way. Who knows? Maybe I am looking at my retirement here smile smiley Maybe I am looking at a pipe dream though... at this point, it's anyone's guess.

People,

If you really want to help this site, WebDude has explained it all in a past post. I bet he doesn't even remember this post...

"Thanks very much for the kudos. I appreciate it. The best way to help this site is by getting others to join in. I have a vision whereas this site would become the premier place for folks to go for any type of information related to fishing in Minnesota. Maybe eventually, the world (but we'll see). The one thing that I have in my favor is the fact that this is a totally non-profit site and that gives me a much greater leeway then the other sites out there. I don't have to worry about making a buck, pissing off people, whether or not you are a contributor or pay for ads, etc., etc. This gives this site an unbiased approach to anything that has to do with fishing, be it the forums, articles, stories, whatever I happen to dream up.

I have guides that post here, magazines that have contacted me about this site, even been getting some mentions in some of the fishing blogs. I actually had an owner of another one of the Minnesota Fishing sites call me up and try to buy this site from me. The problem is I am afraid of what they will turn this site into. I like it the way it is and I think that it is going fine. You gotta remember that this thing is less then 2 years old and there are a lot of established sites and marketing that I have to break into. It just takes times and effort on my part and hopefully some effort on the part of people who enjoy coming here to chew the fat.

One thing you forum people probably don't realize, because you come straight here to see posts and reply and stuff, is that the directory is becoming quite popular. The reason for this is that I don't require anything from the people and businesses who want their site listed there. The only thing I do is check to make sure the site is legitimate and about fishing and up it goes. I have been contacted by big boat manufacturers like Smoker Craft and Alumnicraft, tackle manufacturers like Northland and Tyger, and lots of others, some I've heard of, some not. The point is that it is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many more fishing related businesses and people out there. I kind of look at the directory as hopefully becoming the next "Yahoo" of fishing. That would be great. And the only reason I am mentioning the directory is that it shows that people know we are here and some are beginning to believe that this site will or is starting to become a force in the fishing community. Another thing is that the directory is international. I am starting to get a lot of stuff from Europe and Mexico coming in. So all the work some day may pay off.

Another part of the site that is very popular is the picture sections. Not sure why. I think people like looking at fish. How big they are, who caught them, etc. It helped a lot when Google crawled my pictures and added many of them in their image database. In fact, Tap Tap Tap told me someone found a picture of him through Google, holding up a nice slab (heaven forbid he would ever catch something that big :-)). Another very popular part of the site is the kids pictures. It brings a smile to my face just looking at them. Personally, I think that was the smartest thing I ever did, starting those pages and database. Nothing like the smile of a kid with a nice size 'eye heh? Ya gotta love it.

Anyway, I am rambling on again. So if you really want to help this site, get a buddy to join or spread the word and get those posts going. The more information the better. At some point I am going to have to bust the forums up a bit so people can find the info faster and better, but 'til that time comes, just keep posting, reports, info. weather, where, when, how, etc... I don't care. Just keep it going folks!"

Well, the forums have been busted up and I have gotten a couple of people to join. How about you? A few more users from everyone of you is what this site needs.

And once again I say to WebDude, I couldn't of said it better myself!

Okay folks,

Here is something I want to run by you...

I have been toying with ideas to get new users to join. I have found in the past that no matter what I post or how well I do in the search engines, the best users I get are really referrals from you good folks. So, with that in mind, what do you think of having an MFP New User Contest? We could have new users post in the "New User Forum" and they could post who gets credit for their joining. We could have an up-to-date page showing the results of the contest. We could run the contest from now until the walleye opener. As for a prize, I really cannot offer anything substantial... only myself and my time. How about a day of fishing with me on a lake of the users choice? I could supply all the tackle we would need, bait, gas... the winner could just show up. I have a fairly nice boat with all the amenities. Maybe we could pick the top 2 winners. I have plenty of room. We could start a new thread on this and just keep it going. I will not be able to do this ON the opener, but maybe a couple of weeks after the opener.

Now this is just in the planning stage. You all may have some ideas that will make this idea better.

What do you all think?
