Over the past few days I've checked ice in St. Paul, W. st. paul, lake elmo, and hastings. Ice varies from 4" to 6" on lakes and ponds. It is not as strong as your normal ice for this time of year. It is like spring ice conditions. Use caution...it is hard to keep me off the ice. On one pond yesterday we chose to leave because the runoff has left the ice crystalized. On another we tied a rope to one another 30ft. long just in case. Use a chisle to check the strength of ice because the warmer it is the weaker it is, even though it is still 4"-6". Listen to the news if you want...it leaves more fish for me...and keeps you safer. But if your like me, be careful, anything can happen. Always be prepared but have fun.
If you've got short, stubby fingers and wear reading glasses, any relaxation you would normally derive from fly fishing is completely eliminated when you try to tie on a fly. ~ Jack Ohman, Fear of Fly Fishing, 1988
