hey Redfin,2-4 test is best.As far as lakers that can get mighty big a 26"-28" medium action rod will work just fine.
Oh before I forget ,welcome aboard.

I prefer a 2x4 with 85lb tuff line. ooo smiley
I know some that use a 5' med-lite rod with 10lb for lakers in winter. Depending on the lake, you may be trying to pull a 20lber out of the hole. And bring a gaf if you plan on keeping them, makes it easier to get them out of the hole.

one of my first ice fishing methods was actually a 2x4. When I was young probably in elemenary school I would wrap a bunch of line around a 2x4 that was maybe 12-16 inches long. I would tie on my hook and bait it up usually something for pike. And basically use it like a tip up. Just put a bobber on it and unwind a decent amount of line and sit it next to the hole. It worked pretty good for a kid with no money. My dad got a hand auger from a friend at work and so we got that for free and then with our 2x4 poles we just had to buy bait.

Great cheap way to get out and catch some pike. My dad and I caught many 5-10 pound pike this way. Now I actually use poles.

I use spiderwire mono a lot and have had no problems. People have told me that it spools off a little too easily, but I haven't had any problems.
