Made my way out onto a local pond the other day for some tip up fishing. couple hours doezen flages and i think 6 fish or so. Biggest six pounds, broke off on a couple. Three good inches when we got to where we wanted to be, pretty shady though on the way out. If I didnt feel safe I wouldnt have been out!!

I don't think there is a fish in the world that would get me out on 3 inches of ice. Ever hear this "There is no such thing as safe ice". They pull fishermen out of the water with hooks every year that "Felt safe" on 3 inches of ice.

DNR "Safe Ice" guidelines.
4" to 6" of good clear ice, for a man.
6" to 8" for an ATV or snow machine
12 inches (minimum) for an automobile, or light truck.

It's going to get much colder in the next few days. Why push your luck, there are people that want you alive. Always keep in mind "There is no such thing as safe ice".

That's why I never go it alone early on.
Once I've proven a path then I will.Besides knowing what to do & being prepared is something all icefishermen should be aware of.3" of ice is thin & a spring can be thinner.Knowing your lakes is important.I'd never venture out on some lake without prior knowledge.Scouting an area first is key.I see weekenders getting into trouble all of the time. They do not check thing out first, instead they just go out assuming all is o.k.
I know every square inch of the lakes I fish & I know the trouble spots. It took some time to figure it all out.

We are making ice.
