AP) Baudette, Minn. Despite a bounty of walleyes and gorgeous weather, fishing pressure on Lake of the Woods reached a 10-year low over the summer.

A survey showed that anglers fished the lake for 703,000 hours and kept 217,000 pounds of walleye, said Tom Heinrich, large lake specialist for the Department of Natural Resources.

That's down from 825,000 angler-hours and 283,000 pounds of walleye in the summer of 2005. Since 1997, summer catch rates have been as high as 416,000 pounds.

In 2005, the DNR reduced the lake's walleye limit from six to four each day, with a ban on keeping fish between 19 1/2 inches and 28 inches in length. Several resorts were against the changes, saying the lower bag limits would discourage anglers from traveling to Lake of the Woods.

Heinrich, however, said bag limits aren't to blame because fishing pressure and walleye harvest were at high levels in 2005, the first year of the new regulations. High gas prices over the summer likely played a larger role, he said.

That is wrong! ooo smiley

How about it took almost all winter for the water to settle last winter. It discouraged people from coming because the reports were crap! There also are many lakes on the way that produced fish! Mille Lacs?

You just cant believe everything you read. mad smiley

Gas prices might be the biggest culprit, but the drought the state is experiencing is worse than the gas prices. A lot of access ramps are going to be harder to use NEXT year. Even the Cloquet St.Louis River ramp was mostly quiet this year because water levels were so low you couldn't be sure where it was safe to boat because of rocks.

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!

You got it right with the low water ramp problem deal! Last August I was going to put in on a favorite crappie lake but when I got to the landing I realized that I wouldn't be able to get my boat off the trailer. I found that in more than one place around the Grand Rapids area.
