I've shot deer with bellies full of corn 2 years in a row,yet I'm not the corn feeding guy.I work for my deer. I wonder who it is & what would happen if I had a DNR guy come to me when dressing the deer?
DNR cracking down on deer baiting
If people are found hunting over bait, the penalty includes a fine between $150 and $200. If a deer is shot over bait, it’s an automatic $500 restitution payment.

DNR Reports
Minnesota deer hunters are reminded to review new baiting regulations before heading to the field this fall. Changes in the regulations went into effect late last year after deer baiting complaints reached a new high during the 2005 deer hunting season.
“Conservation officer reports were laced with illegal baiting activity last deer season,” said Maj. Al Heidebrink, DNR Enforcement Division operations manager in St. Paul. “The rule changes that took effect late last year will hopefully tighten the loopholes some hunters used to skirt the law.”
Heidebrink said if people are found hunting over bait, the penalty includes a fine between $150 and $200. If a deer is shot over bait, it’s an automatic $500 restitution payment.
It has been illegal to bait deer in Minnesota since 1991, but those who choose to break the law argued that they were simply feeding other wildlife. Heidebrink said other hunters got fed up with the excuse and asked that changes in the regulation eliminate any loopholes.
“Hunters can make a difference. And they should, because baiting hurts those who follow the rules,” Heidebrink said.

THE BASICS OF THE NEW RULE
It is currently illegal to place or use bait for the purpose of taking deer. Bait does not include liquid scents, salt or minerals placed for deer. Bait also does not include food resulting from normal or accepted farming, forest management, wildlife food plantings, orchard management, or other similar land management activities.
These new provisions are intended to close some of the loopholes associated with baiting. Such issues as “I’m feeding the pheasants not the deer,” or “I didn’t know there was bait here,” or “I didn’t know there was bait placed here last week” will no longer work.

Area deer registration stations changes
DNR News
Area deer hunters are advised that a number of deer registration stations have changed in St. Peter and Mankato.
Stein Innvaer, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) assistant wildlife manager at Nicollet, said the changes are the result of DNR’s shift toward registering deer using an electronic licensing system (ELS). “In order to get as many deer as possible registered on ELS, we have had to close some registration stations that lack ELS machines and move them to locations that do have it,” Innvaer explained.
Three locations in Mankato will no longer be registering deer. They are: Shell Super Stop and Wash on Poplar Street.; Southern Archery North on South Victory Drive; and Hilltop Meats on Pfau Street. Also not registering deer is Red Bear Hunting Emporium off Highway 169 in North Mankato.
New Mankato registration stations are the Holiday Station on north Riverfront Drive and the Holiday Station on Adams Street (next to McDonalds off Highway 22).
Gander Mountain in Mankato will continue to register deer and this year there will be two registration locations in Eagle Lake. Those are Eagle Express on Parkway Ave. (old Highway 14) and Eagle Lake Amoco in town.
Registration stations closed in St. Peter this year are Hermie’s Bait and Tackle and Whiskey River Emporium, both located east of St. Peter off Highway 99. Also, Oak Ridge Archery in Kasota will not be registering deer.
St. Peter stations that will be registering deer are the Holiday Station off Highway 169 on the north end of town and Arrow Ace Hardware on South Minnesota Ave. A new station will also be open in Cleveland. The Cleveland BP is located just off Highway 99.

CK,
Have you ever thought about getting one of those pesky deer with the jig. I suppose with "NO MEAT" on it that wouldn't be considered baiting, but it might be kind of hard trolling for deer. Give it a try and let me know the results. ooo smiley
