What do you think about pinching down the barbs on your hooks? Do you think you lose more fish or does it not make that big of an impact on hook set?

I have thought about pinching down the barbs on my rapalas and some of my other baits mainly for safety. While trying to grab a smallie with a mouth full of hooks you always run a risk of getting one in the finger. I figure if I fish for the rest of my life I will probably get one sooner or later. I thought it would be easier to pull it out if the barb was pinched down. Pinching the barb might just save me a trip to the ER.

So what do you guys do, do you leave the barbs or pinch them down?

I plan on leaving the barbs on my jigs but pinching down the trebble hooks.

No-Fish,
I've never thought about it, but it seems like a good idea!

First thing I do with all Rapalas and Crankbaits is pinch all of the barbs with a pliers.....I started doing it on Mille Lacs and that carried over to the section of the Mississippi River that I fish which is catch and release for Walleye and Bass.
I do it to make it easier to release the fish, and that's good for both the fish and fishermen.....

I definitely lose few more fish........

My feeling is if I'm fishing catch and release, I pinch the barbs. I'm sure I loose a few fish, but I've lost a few with barbs to, just alot easier to release them with less trauma. When I go after trout, I definately pinch all.

With a rappala you have 9 hooks on 3 trebles. It would make sense. I never pinch my barb on the jig because it comes out quickly anyway.Although I let alot go,I'hate hate to loose the mosters.Gotta get a pic to add proof to the pudding.

Jigs always seem to be easy to take out and you see most of them hooked in the lip with the jig. Its just the rapalas and similar baits that seem like pinching barbs might be a good idea. I plan on going back through all my baits and start pinching. Probably only a couple hundred hooks in my rapala boxes that i will need to get to.

Last christmas the best gift i got was a chance to rummage around my wifes grandfathers fishing stuff. He has been collecting stuff for years but he doesn't get out any more. I got 2 spinning rods and reel combos, one fly rod and reel and probably 50 rapalas and more jigs and misc. stuff then I can count.

Still haven't used it all.
