After 3 coveys and 17 birds several snap shots without even getting my cheek onto the stock I scored. Patients and persistance with a smidgeon of luck.
After a run through the pines that BD & Aaron worked on Saturday.Buck & I went to Blackies, thats where the Boyz had a long walk for notta. Well we jumped 2 birds,1 twice & a different one.Buck really was birdie. It was fun to watch how he scoured the ground. Well it was time to go.He was not out of gas so I let him out & we went about 10 mph.All of a sudden he breaks down into the ditch/woods and 2 birds break.I stopped & 1 more next to me busts loose.Well I get into the brush & started to work the area & 2 more get up .The one that went straight away got smoked & buck was ontop of it immeadiatly.
What a way to end the day.

A Ruffed grouse is what they call an upland bird wereas a duck is waterfowl.
Grouse have a big breast on them & it is white meat, not red like a duck.
They are good if you know how to make them. They can be a little gamy tasting from the tree buds they eat so you have to know how to make them.
The one BD shot after it was cleaned I cut the breast meat from the bone & sliced it up into stips. Then soaked it in milk & breaded it with shorelunch. Then I put into a pan of hot oil.It took about 10 minutes & it was done. Ask the boyz & they'll tell you it was awesome.

I used to do snappers when I was a kid but I've not caught one to shell out & make soup.I might next year for the hell of it.I do not go for squirrels. When I was a kid I used to.We would put them in a crock pot & add cream of mushroom soup.

I must say that I've seen several covies of 5 birds or better.
This is going to be a good year.
I'd reccomend for you grouse hunters to get out more this years as the rewards will be there.
Last year I'd be lucky to see 2 or 3 in a day now I'm seeing 10 in a couple hours.
The rain is looming ,but I'm going back to the spot we jumped last night to see if I can thin em out some.
I should get my limit in the freezer & bring them out for our get together.
We'll have grouse ala CK in a nice terriaki pepper sauce.

CK,
Nice one! I wish we could have gottin up a couple of big covies of birds, maybe next time. We went out walking in the park Sunday morning and we didn't see anything. I think there is just way too much traffic in there, so I need to look for new spots that I can get to in my car. I think I will just start driving your way! blush smiley

You can drive to the spot I'm standing on by car& you can get into the pines were we first stopped.
Sure it's a little drive, but you go where the grouse are.
I'll be in them within 45 minutes.Check for pics tommorow. Hey BD,looks like I should buy a pheasant stamp .I saw 2 so far by that field before lil red.Just 5$ I think.Ducks & geese were dumping in last night on the way out.It sounded so cool, all the chatter .buck wanted to go investigate ,but it was late.
Come back tommorow to see if I scored again with that new covey.

Dude got his first bird last night. He has his pooch Marty with.I got some nice shots of them driving. I also have to say the popals are gorgous. Here is a taste of yesterday after work. Oh ,shot 3 times -no birds. Tough shots & very smart flippin birds.

We get to do this every day.
I guess I'll have to just listen to the Twins instead of being there.
That's my trade off.
