So I went out last night and the wife decided to come with me. I tried a new spot and went over to Minnehaha creek and walked down to where it enters the Mississippi. Never walked down that far before, it was a fairly long hike from where we parked.

After the long hike we had only a few minutes to fish becuase we got a late start to the evening. My wife made 5-10 casts before calling it quits but she did end up catching the only fish of the night which was a small smallie. I think we ended up fishing for about 15-20 minutes but the point was more to get outside then to fish so it was a good night.

There were alot of people down by the river fishing with pop bottles with line wrapped around them and what looked to be only a bare hook. They would toss the hook out and then just pull it back in. One of them caught a decent smallie doing this and it went right into his bucket. Correct me if I am wrong but isn't it catch and release only for game fish in this part of the river? I didn't have the heart to tell him he should release it becuse it looked like it was his main source of food for his family who was also there.

All in all the weather was perfect and the wife caught a fish all be it a small one so it was a great night in the concrete jungle.

Mr. Nofish
It sounds like you really lived up to your name smile smiley! I've fished down there a couple of times with PB. It's really crazy the variety of fish right there, it makes it a lot of fun! I think you're right about that being catch and release only, but I've done the same thing in the past. I didn't have the heart to tell any of them, that they couldn't keep their fish either. I'm sure they need the food and that's just fine with me!

Yeah I got skunked. But I was a nice guy and let the wife use my favorite go to lure so I will use that as my excuse. I was actually happier she caught one then I would have been if I was the one who caught it.

I think I might try to go down there again sometime soon. What is river like in that area? Is it a steep drop into deep water or is it gradual? Last night we were just casting cranks and rapalas nothing to fancy, is there any technique that seems to work better from shore there? I was thinking live bait would be a decent option and would probably allow you to catch a wider variety of fish.

Well I am proud of you. It takes a bigger man to put someone else into fish.
I did the same thing with my boy. I had my hands full on the river to keep him on the spot.
I get my share ,but what was important was that he caught the most so he could walk away saying I beat my dad!I wanted him to remember the outing as that is why dads are here for.
If I was a prick then it would not have mattered if he was even along for the trip.
Being that you did what you did nofish makes me proud of you as an outdoorsman plus it will make your bond stronger with your wife.

GOOD JOB!

NF,
As far as structure goes, I'm not really sure how fast it drops off? The thing about the live bait, I think that would do you good to bring some next time and I'm sure you will catch more fish. And yes you would catch a wider variety as well!

Cool NoFish, 142 steps to be exact... smile smiley

Yes all Bass and Walleye must be released....not sure which side you were fishing on but with the super low water you pretty much need waders to get out to the current seem where it drops off, it's just to shallow the bait fish can't get up the Creek and you have a bad angle from shore.

You are right live bait, crawlers will bring in multi-specie action.

For me here on out it's going to be Crank Baits and then in November we'll switch to Ring Worms and assorted Plastics....

I do miss those stairs they keep me in good shape heading into upland game season.... smile smiley

Last night when I was there we were on to the left of where the creek enters the river. Not very far down the shore.

Saw one guy wading out a little ways last night. Maybe on Friday night I will try to get down there again. Its either going to be fishing or poker on friday we'll see which one wins out.
