Well, I it was a strange one on Sunday. All reports I got were that they were not biting. Kind of hard to keep me off the water, though. So me and my boy fished pretty much all morning and part of the afternoon - all the usual spots; big lake, Ellings, Pier Bridge, around Battle Island, the narrows - even out in front of the cabin ---- Nothing, maybe just 3 bites between us but nothing in the boat. It was tough, folks!

So I decided to take the wife and kid on a boat ride up the Prairie. We went to the rope swing. The DNR was sitting in the weeds waiting for boats to pass. On the way up, he was tagging some pontoon for something. On the way back, he told me to slow down (I was barely moving). Seems the whole river is now a no wake zone. Sure wish they would post that. Kind of hard to tell and I never knew.

So we are ceeping down the river and of course, I got the Lowrance on. I've been watching it once in a while and seeing the ocassional fish. We hit this one spot and I mentioned to the kid that I got a bunch of fish on the graph. I didn't want to, but he talked me into stopping so he could throw out a leech. I thought I was looking at a bunch of rock bass to tell you the truth. No sooner had his leech hit the water and Wham! He pulled out a walleye. Well, I decided what the heck and threw out the anchor and pulled out my rod and baited up. Wham! I caught one too grin smiley Well the wife didn't have a license, but the kid and I limited out in about an hour. We caught probably 25 all together but some were pretty small. Largest was a 16" I caught right under the boat. I was totally suprised to find the 'eyes there. I have tried close to that area in spring and have caught a few, but folks, this was a feeding frenzy! They were hungry and swallowed 6 hooks If we hadn't run out of leeches, we probably could have caught more. Go figure, the water was 70 degrees and barely moving. We were catching them in about 10' on tiny metalic red gamakatsu hooks.

Now, I haven't cleaned a fish since the opener, but the wife said she wanted some walleye for dinner on Monday, so I filleted them up and I can smell them now. I had given up for the day because the bite was so bad. I hadn't been skunked on Sandy for quite a while. Talk about a suprise... and another thing - the weather was gorgeous grin smiley

I was wondering when they were going to start enforcing a no wake law on the prarie. I did not think it was the entire river either?Way to go on the "wall dogs"! There has also been an alright crappie bite under the bridge early in the morning. The best fish I have seen in awhile was a 1lb 10oz sunfish come off of Aitkin lake on sunday. It measured 11 1/2" from nose to tail and 12 1/2" from fin to belly! What a monster!

Yeah, Aitkin is good for big sunnies. I caught a lot of "dinner plates" out there last year.

As for the Prairie, I was suprised too. I didn't see any buoys or anything to indicate a no wake zone. Same as it has always been. I am wondering if the guy was feeding me a line. Right after the bridge, I am used to bringing the boat up to plane. Guess I can't anymore. What was aggravating is the fact that I was already just putting along. I would have considered my speed as a no wake as it was, yet he still told me to slow down. I can only go so slow with my boat confused smiley

Well Dude,
Me and my brother went out on Sunday morning and got about five walleyes, 3 nice eaters and 2 little ones. We were fishing on a drop off the front of the boat was in 8 ft and the back was in 11 ft. WE were bobber fishing of course and casting right into the edge of the weedline. My brother caught a 1lb.-1oz. sunny, I will post the pic when I get it onto my computer, it was HUGE. So, I would say 6 ft with leaches was working great, we were only out for an hour and caught about 8 fish, with the sunny's perch and walleyes all together. I don't know, I guess sometimes you get lucky!

The Mississippi is around 1 foot to 5. My boy & I drilled some eyes in 5' before we left. You never know where they hide ,but if you look you'll find. They got to be somewhere & they still have to eat. Way to go walldog's

I am not sure how far you can go. It's been many years since I have gone as far as I could. I remember taking a small boat and going at least several miles where it got pretty narrow and we had to pull the boat over some trees that had fallen across. Maybe someone else can help you here. It's hard for me to gauge distance in a boat on a river. I do know we went quite a while. confused smiley

Lets say the rope swing is two miles in……the farthest I’ve been is one mile past the swing.
