I had the honor of taking my father fishing last night on the Mississippi River, pool 9. My father is an avid angler with bait fishing, worms, minnows, grubs, etc. He has never wanted to use artificial lures or plastics. Yesterday, he purchased the infamous Chatterbait. He decided he would give them a chance. He caught his first fish ever on an artificial lure...The Chatterbait. He landed a huge sheephead... smile smileyHA! He has never fished with artificial before, even though he has river fished for 50+ years. The reaction on his face when it hit was priceless. He talked about it for the next couple hours and is still talking about it this morning. Next he tied on a buzzbait and tried them out in a lilly pad field. He had several largemouth strikes, but had trouble setting the hook. Still ended up catching a few nice ones. He was like a little kid in a candy store. All in all it was my favorite day of fishing this year. By the end of the night, I noticed he started opening my tackle compartments and putting a couple spinnersbaits, and buzzbaits in his tackle box... laugh smiley

Thats classic, thats what I use to do to my dad, by the time I left high school my dad had no fishing gear left. I have since resupplied his box to some extent.

Growing up I was all live bait all the time, now when walleye fishing I am still mainly live bait but that is due more to what works on my particular lake.

But I really enjoy going out with the artifical stuff in search of pike and bass. Smallmouth are my newest fascination and I am trying to learn all I can about how to fish them in the rivers.

My next goal is to learn how to effectively fish plastics. Does anyone know of a good website that shows how to rig up plastics in different ways (texas rig, carolina rig, etc...)? I think it would be a usefull addition to the site.

cool smiley I teach the various riggings to my students. I can get together my lesson plans and put them on my website or mail them to you. It goes over how to rig worms, lizards, tubes, creatures, craws, etc numerous methods, on a kids level, so it works for me...ha

one example of texas rigged worms is
right click and view image for an example

Bass Pro Shops 'Worm rigs that bust bass' is a good article on the different rigging techniques.

I saw on the show 'people who fish' on the outdoor channel, that they will use a crawler harness with Gulp crawlers the same way they would with live bait, so for walleye it's really not much different.

I'm interested in seeing Rob's info also though, the more knowledge a person can pack into the heads the better.. usually.
