A buddy and I hit the river around 1pm for what was supposed to be a 4 hour paddle. But we spent a little to much time fishing so it took more like 6 hours and the last 2 hours required us to paddle as hard as we could since we were running so late.
It was a great time on the water. I ended up with 4 small mouth and my buddy got skunked, not sure how though.
All 4 fish were small but still fun. We just could not figure out a pattern to the fish. All 4 fish came from very different type locations and all 4 were caught on different lures. We saw alot of large smallies but the were not intrested in anything we had. We also saw a large pike I am guess it was over 30". I was just about to cast my rapala by it but the dog saw it at the same time and went in to try to catch it herself. Needless to saw I never saw it again.
I did have a large fish of some sort that hit a gold colored plastic shad on a spinner but it took a hard run down stream and got behind a log and snapped my line. I only had 6 lbs test spooled on so it didn't have much chance to stand up to a larger fish in that type of current.
I will post some pics of my monsterous 12 inch smallies if I get a chance. Still working on another trip to see if we can get into some of those larger smallies that we were seeing everywhere.

So just thinking I might post this question here as well. I saw alot of large small mouth that where actively swimming around, alot of fish moving at a good speed down the shore line.
What can I do to trigger these fish. I passes rapalas and a few other baits right by there face and they would not strike.
Any tips in this situation?

I came up with that screen name a few years ago when I decided to really start learning more about fishing. At the time I didn't know much and didn't have alot of luck, I have improved significantly since then. But now I am just trying new things and going new places so the learning curve is back into effect again. I am really starting to love going to the St. Croix, alot of big fish and its very peaceful, no motor boats to deal with.
To answer your question, my back isn't to bad. I am a little sore but not too bad. I was in the back of the canoe and I was doing most of the paddling since my buddy (who is training for the Twin Cities marathon) kept getting tired. I am young and still have a strong back, atleast for now.
I am really hoping I can find some time to get back up there again this fall. My buddy and I are thinking of going back with the wives next time. We'll see how that goes.

Here are a few pictures of some of the fish I caught this weekend. Nothing big but it alteast proves I do get out once in a while.

Ok, I lied they weren't all small, this guy pulled the canoe all over the river, it took 2 strong guys and a dog to pull it in. I thought it was going to take us down for sure.

This is my best PB impression, my buddy was busy dealing with the dog so I had to snap this one myself. Took me 3 tries.

So thats proof, I do fish on the odd occasion, you will have to take my word for it that I am the one in the picture.

I'd advise you to change speeds is your rap retrieval. Stop & jerk or go on a steady fast retrieve. Go with larger baits then smaller baits & last but not least a zara spook twiched on the top water can be deadly or a buzz bait. Just think of a wounded minnow, eratic action can tell the fish that this guy will be easy to eat.

I think I tried most of that. I used retrieve speeds anywhere from super slow, to lightning fast, start and stop, also i tired a more irratic jerking retrieve. I did this with all my cranks, rapalas, and plastics/spinners, i tried it all it seemed. I used buzzbiats large and small both slow and fast as well the only thing I didn't use was live bait or a top water popper, I just picked some poppers up for next time though.
Oh well, just gave me another puzzle to figure out. If it was easy it would get boring.
