i went fishing in the cannon river off a bridge by the dam in northfield. i was fishing for walleyes and channel cats, with a perch deep diving rapala, then all of the sudden i fell this big BUMP there was a fallen tree right where my lure was so i thought i was snagged. i was like DANG, but then the drag started whistling and i found out it was a huge smallie! i fought with it for about 20 min and then i finally got it up to the bridge, it was 18 inches in length and 14 inches in girth it was FAT! that was the biggest smallie i have ever caughten in my life ( i have only caughten 4 smallies) so now im fishin' for smallies!!
Got one like that couple of saturdays ago on Root River. Sure did put up a fight. They are alot of fun to catch. I was using crawlers that day. Went through 2 dozen in a matter of 3 hours catchin' smallies. Ok some redhorse , suckers, mooneyes, and bullhead to. But alot of smallies. My friend claims he caught a 21 incher where we were at. If you ask me that is a big bass for a river you can wade across 90% of the time.
If you've got short, stubby fingers and wear reading glasses, any relaxation you would normally derive from fly fishing is completely eliminated when you try to tie on a fly. ~ Jack Ohman, Fear of Fly Fishing, 1988
