Hi! I just purchased a boat and trailer from a gentleman in Wisconsin where the trailer never had to be registered. I am trying to register it here in Minnesota where I live and am having a nightmare trying to. They need to know what kind of trailer it is, some sort of id number, description, his address, etc. I have asked him already what kind of trailer it is and he doesn't know. I also do not see any sort of id number on it. What do I do? Any help would be great.

I just did the same thing. I bought a boat and trailer from Wisconsin. Same thing.

First, you'll need the trailers vin#. Most likely that is located near the front/tongue of the trailer. That will also most likely have the manufacture year, model and make of trailer. If you can't find it, swing it by a boat dealer and they will show you.

Next, you'll need a purchase agreement from the seller to you...nothing more than a piece of paper saying you are buying it from them, for how much, your address and the sellers address. Have the seller sign it.

Then, you should be good to go.

If the trailer has no VIN plate, then it would be like registering a homemade trailer. That is a pain.

Good luck, any problems give me a call. (507) 429-0456

The DMV said that I need a complete description of the trailer... She wasn't very helpful. Can I just staple a printout of our address and his address to the bill of sale he already signed with a typed out description?

Hi Girly Girl,

Welcome to the forum. I remember a past post on this somewhere in this forum. May want to search for it...

that's one thread *I* found searching the "archives" mostly about finding the actual vin #..started out about boat's but turned into a trailers thread.

A stapled copy should work out good. I think I included a copy of his Boat license which had his address on it. As far as a detailed description, Vin #, model, make, and whether it is over or under 3000 lbs. Example, 1998 Rangertrail, Single Axle, Under 3000 lb, vin#5555555555555555. I have a friend that works in a County License office, Houston County Minnesota, her name is Dar, (507) 725-5812. She is great to work with and helped me out a lot. If you call her, tell her Rob Gross said you might be able to help.
