Okay folks,

I would like to plug my company here. I know, I know, this isn't about fishing, but thought I would post some info anyway.

As you all know, I am a web developer. My company hosts and develops web sites. We also do SEO (Search Engine Optimization). We build a lot of different stuff for clients. One of the things that sets us apart from other so-called web development companies is the fact that we concentrate on all aspects of a company's website from the ground up. We only have around 50 websites so we can concentrate on those clients and give them "special attention." It's a concept that has worked well and about 50% of our clients have moved from other hosting/web development companies to us. Some of our clients are large Fortune 500 Companies, some are small ma and pop shops. To give you an idea of how we work, I'll tell you a real life situation that happened about 5 years ago...

A lady by the name of Dawn called me up one day and she was in tears. She was the Marketing Director of a fairly large non-profit organization. She had contacted a web development company located in Texas to do their website. After sending the company brochures, artwork, and various other information, the company bid on the site. The amount, the Texas company said, to develop the site was going to cost $60,000. They wanted half up front to start and the remainder was to be billed at the end of the project.

Well, Dawn waited and the her company waited and nothing happened. After several months, she called down to Texas and asked "How is the site coming?" The response was... "It's coming along great! Our team of developers are working on it... You'll love it!"

This went on for some time. Dawn was getting frusturated and so was her supervisors. They had payed the $30,000 and couldn't see any way out of what they had started.

About a year later, the company down in Texas contacted Dawn and said the website was done. They planned a grand opening and a date was picked for when the site was to go live. You have to remember that neither Dawn nor anyone in her company had seen anything yet. They were not very web savvy and did not know what to expect.

The opening date came and Dawn and her company anxiously started up their various web browsers and went to the site. AND Guess what??...

They hated it. It was crap!

Dawn and her company decided to sue the Texas company. The Texas company counter-sued and wanted the rest of their money. It was a mess. Dawn contacted some people she knew and wanted to get an unbiased opinion as to what the cost of such a website should have been.

Here is where I entered the picture. I was referred to Dawn as an unbiased third party and I was given all the files and access to the site. I spent several days going over the information. I wanted to be thorough and I new that my statements were going to be used in a court of law. Well, after reviewing all the information I was presented, I came to the conclusion that I could have done the work in about 20 hours!!!! If you bust out your calculator and figure that out, this company had charged Dawn's company $3000 per hour!!!!! mmmmmm That's a pretty good rate, dontchya think?

I never testified in court, but I had to file an affidavit that was used. I am not sure how it was settled because it was settled out of court. I do know that Dawn got a chunk of the money back.

Well, about 3 months later, Dawn called me and asked if I would be willing to do their site for them. You gotta remember that she and her company are pretty gun-shy about web developers at this point. I said I would think about it and would call her back the next day.

I slept on it and came up with what I thought was a brilliant idea. I went to work the next day and called Dawn and told her this...

"How about if I do this? At the end of each month, I'll close out your billing and send you an invoice. On the invoice, I'll have line-items of all the work I did for you and how long I spent. At any time during the month, you can call me personally and get the current amount owed for that month. If you want me to stop work and wait for the following month, that is okay by me. If you want me to continue on the work, that is okay too. You can dictate how much time is spent on the site.

"I'll also put the site up in test-mode which means you will be able to watch it on a daily basis to see what work is being done. If you see something you don't like, just give me a call and I'll change it. You want me to add something, same thing, just give me a call."

Well folks, she absolutely loved this idea. What I effectively did was place control of the website into her hands. Into her company's hands too. I made myself available to her at all times. she contacted me daily for the next couple of months and we pounded out a very nice website for her company. In fact, it was chosen by Forbes Magazine as Best of the Web in 2002! How do you like them apples!

So, this worked out so well for this client, I decided I would use the same approach for ALL my clients. You see, I don't want nor can I handle 100,000 websites. I would prefer to have a few websites and be able to fully concentrate on those. It's all about customer service folks! Something that is lacking in today's world. We do not do "Projects." Using the word "project" puts a finality to the end result. I have found that web sites never end, therefor, the "project" never ends. It is something I believe in and feel very strongly about. There is no "secret room" filled with "secret web developers' all feverously writing "secret code" to get the job done. I would prefer everything out in the open. (As a side note, one of my first clients kept pestering me on how to do this and how to do that. He is now a developer and handles all his own stuff. He just rents space and hosting from me. I figure, the more I can teach you, the more you will understand. It's a trust-thing folks).

This concept works for all my clients, whether they are big or small. If all you can afford is a couple of hours a month, that's okay with me. If you want to do 50 hours a month, that is okay with me too. I understand that things can get tight and I am trying to make these types of services available and affordable for all my clients!

When you call our company, you don't get... "Tech support will call you back within 72 hours." Nor do you get voice messaging. You ask for and get ME! The guy who does the work. I have found that that is the best way. I still have clients that have been with me since the Internet started. One moved and came back (it's a jungle out there) Changes to your site can happen pretty much as I am talking to you over the phone! This is what I call Customer Service!

Anyway, if you read this post this far, you might be interested. Following are a couple of links that will give you some examples of what exactly I do. If you are intersted or would like to know more, please click...

it's funny, that a SIGNATURE is the place meant for a link.. I should join so they can ban me .. then I'll just tongue smiley at them

On similar note of gas or a website though, a website does work smile smiley I've now in 4 months paid for my website (the $60 a year) through people buying my $9.99 a year ad space though an ebay ad, and clicking links, so I guess I made the right choice in that.

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!

Well, I looked at this post and decided I should really move it here. It is a product I am trying to sell and to be completely fair, if another user posted something like this, I would probably move it here. Anyway... just trying to keep things above board! grin smiley
