As some of you know I often spend winters down in the Branson Missouri area (Springfield to be exact) and most summers in Minnesota or Wisconsin. But this year threw me a curve and it didn't happen this year. But, fishing Missouri and Arkansas as well as the Northwoods has given me some good and surprising avenues of comparison. For example--

STATE RECORD WALLEYES

1. Minnesota 17.8 pounds from Lake Saganaga in Cook County
2. Wisconsin 18.0 pounds from Vilas County
3. Missouri 21.1 pounds from Bull Shoals Lake in 1988
4. Arkansas 22.11 pounds from Greers Ferry Lake on 3/12/1982

WHO would have believed that Missouri and Arkansas have larger state record walleyes than Minnesota or Wisconsin?

However, the walleye are rarely targeted by the locals. A few local anglers fish them, but for most folks they are normally more of an incidental catch when pursuing other species. Walleye this far south also spend LOTS of time in the lake basin pursuing roaming schools of shad so the techniques have to be tailored to that for much of the season. Spring sees great runs up the creeks and rivers for those pursuing walleye. It is a VERY underutilized fishery.

Here is another shocker--

MISSOURI STATE RECORD MUSKY IS 41 pounds 2 ozs.

Google up Pomme De Terre Lake in Missouri for muskies. EXCELLENT fishery--I may stand to be corrected, but my sources tell me that the second largest Muskies Inc Chapter in America is the local Pomme De Terre Missouri Chapter! There is also another little known lake south of Pomme De Terre that has come on in the last few years and I personally popped a 25 pound muskie from there my last time out.

This all said to just expand the understanding. In the last few decades it has been discovered that Minnesota/Wisconsin/The Northwoods have some excellent largemouth fishing. The South also has some excellent walleye/muskie waters. So next February when it is 25 below you may want to think about a trip south where its 50 degrees and the walleye are on a run, the muskies are on the prowl, and the season is open!

If anyone has an inclination to try the fisheries out when the air turns cold give me a holler and I will help you dial in on the latest patterns. It is most successful from around mid October through the end of March. Of course, that means I may need you to help me dial in on a few patterns sometime in the future.

Good Fishing To Ya,
