Just noticed that 9 out of the last 10 posts were all made by CrappieKieth. Where is everyone else lately?

I would like to see more fishing reports, I am pretty aware of how the fishing is on Big Sandy and Round Lake but I think we would all benefit from some reports from a larger variety of places.

Has no one fished Mille Lacs, LOW, Winne, Minnetonka, Leech, Red Lake in the last month?

I know I don't post alot of reports but the last 2 summers i have been struggling to find time to get out but every time i do I post a report.

I think it is resonable to expect maybe one post a week from each frequent user to report how the fishing is in their area.

I have just noticed a real lack of usefull info in the new posts over the last month or so. Most posts are pretty much useless to our fishing endevours and I think if we all want this site to grow and gain in populatiry we all need to work on making the post more worth reading.

I will make a strong effort to post some good usefull info once a week, with the exception of the first 2 weeks of July considering I will be out of the country.

I agree with you for the most part.I thought that more users would be posting too. However with summer here folks have alot going on.
I have posted pics, stories, contro issues and some humor.Well for me it was funny. Anyway I am trying to do the best I can to get people involved. Yes out of my last 950 some odd posts I have some things that have no weight as to fishing insight or techniques.
We have very serious anglers on board to the weak of heart anglers.
I feel we should have something for everyone, restrictions like you have to post or loose the registration. Whatever probaly won't fly. What did you have in mind?
Alot of my posts take a day or 2 before someone answers or adds too.I just think they are busy.
I would like to have more folks adding there tips and so on.I am concerned that this site stays a fun place to come too.
Oh and as to weight, those articles have excellent info as to when why where & how to.Noone hardly leaves a comment,so am I to think that they are not desired.Go view the top 7 stoies about walleyes.I believe this info to be right on the money.
I'll just keep on keeping on.I hope you can too.

I just went and found some good reports for you.Go see.

I don't have any restrictions in mind like saying you have to post or forfiet your registration. Just a guideline for those willing to meet the challenge more or less.

If you just look at the home page which shows the last 10 posts almost every thread is either pretty pointless to your average user or it was a thread started with good info and then it fades away into more useless chatter.

All I would like to see is keeping the useless chatter in one section and leave the good info threads clean with only good useful informative posts.

I think it just comes down to being more aware of our posting habits. If a post is about how to catch walleye on a clear lake, then all the posts in the thread should be atleast related to techniques for catching walleye and not just random chatter between users which at times we are all guilty of.

The articles that get posted are good, but not everyone will take the time to read a long article, if I am work I don't have time read those long articles and I assume other don't as well.

I agree too... This year the reports seem to be way down. Last year I had at least 10 guides giving , if not weekly, at least monthly reports on lakes like Leech, Mille Lacs, LOTW, Kab, Minnetonka, Vermilion, Winnie, etc. I am bummed that the quality of the posts has degraded as much as it has :-(

I have been racking my brains trying to figure out why. Users too busy? This site sucks? Too many fishing sites? mmmm. Whatever happened to...

Doc Samson,

I miss ya guys! I hope it isn't something I did or said...

WebDude, your site is just fine, it's not that.

I will say that traffic in general, not just reports, is down or at least plateaued on all of the outdoors sites that we manage at Silverton.

I think it's a combination of things. Summer is, in general, a slower period for web users. But there is no doubt that there is also a glut in the number of fishing sites being marketed right now.

You should call me sometime... smile smiley

I guess I am confused. You think the articles should be shorter.I am not following you on this one.You want more pertinent info ,but its too much.Hmmmmmmmm,I can see joining a group & then having some responsibility to the group. It's a valid point in my estimation.

Keep in mind I'm a dumb hick, thats right I said it so I guess some of us need teaching or at least good examples.
This site has been just changed and some may not be aware albeit it was posted that we need to select the general area for each post.So if I did not have the time to read all of these posts because it was too long then I would not know. Yet I'm supposed to know right.

Your general concern is valued by me & others I'm sure.
I guess I've made a few friends through the site and we can stray from the original subject ,so what. Not being nasty, but is it that big of a deal?I know it will be easier to find things, but hey how is everyone going to be satified. Look at MF for example, there are not many doing much of anything. Is it us or is it a trend in the whole scheme of life.

I guess I don't have a problem with long articles I do read them but I can't do it all the time. it depends on when and where I am logging in. Some will read it some won't, no big deal. But an atricle doesn't really spur discuss that much.

I was looking at Fishing Minnesota the other day and they are experienceing 38% growth in forum users this month. So people are out there using forums. The big difference between this forum and FM is that there is just so much more info there. Each thread as value to it and is answering a question. Frankly, if I have a question I post it over there and at LSF becuase I will get an answer there, if I post it on Myfishing pals it will most likely meet no valueable response. And I think we all need to address this issue.

If a question is asked we need to do our best to answer it and not to change the thread topic. If you want to post about something else by all means do it but just start a different thread.

Maybe it would be beneficial to start a new section in the forum just for fishing questions so new users with a question know where to post. And this section should be left free from other posts unrelated to the questions asked.

This site doesn't suck.. by any means.. I've mentioned it to people at times.. I think there's still people on the internet who are afraid to post in forums.. thinking their ideas are either dumb, or that people will tell them they are dumb. That's because SOME forums really do have people sitting around waiting to tell people they're wrong. That ain't the case here (I should know, some of my ideas don't match others wink smiley

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!

WOW! Some very bold statements! unuseful huh! A guy joins and posts almost 1,000 posts in just over two months, introduces a new jig to fellow fisherman, invited everyone on the board to come fish/four wheel with him. In trade he gets a few dumb posts that only hicks like me get....

Webdude/Pierbridge how much of that 38% growth happened in the McGregor forum on fishing Minnesota? Webdude how many good useful replies did you get to your "How’s Big Sandy Been?". Percentage wise it looks the same as here except the people that posted the good reports over there are over here! These forums were broken into different areas to seclude fishing reports? Sounds like growth....
An entire forum of growth. So if we base that like Rick did from fishing Minnesota that would be.......because we added 3 new forums since 2005 that would be %150 forum growth. (Get it!) Rick promotes products and is very good at it. We are not promoting products we are promoting a website.

Well I hate to brake the bad news but try this:

1. Pretend your a 45 to 50 year old that was fishing this weekend with Sand Burr and does not know didly about computers except that this guy from his campground told him there is a bunch of good people that fish the McGregor area on there.

2. Open a browser

3. Get the wife to type in
(yes I am sure that’s right dear)

4. Most of us have a book marked page that gets us right to the forum's. What about the new user? Take a look at the main page no kidding everyone do this. As a new user you are selling the site like a fishing lure. What is the biggest thing that sticks out on that page?

so they click it and what do you really get?

General Discussion?

But wait if we haven’t lost this nibble gentleman by now we will give him another shot!

He goes back to the main page and starts to think about talking with this young whippersnapper and he said that his buddy is going to be on the internet holding a crappie and dangit he wants to see it!
He takes a good look at it this time and reads a little better and gets confused. The last time he picked IN GIANT LETTERS "MINNESOTA FISHING FORUM" it took him to the wrong spot. He has the option to pick the same writing but gets frustrated and says I will just talk to him next weekend and ask him where to go.........

There are (19) links on the homepage that bring you to different forums? (not including the links to current threads in the general discussion forum)

Only two of them actually bring you to the index of forums?

If they get to the index the top two visible forums are "General Discussion" and "Controversial Issues". There are people in this world that love that "Controversial Issue" stuff but we invited people here to talk about there weekend that they had with there families and friends.

This is not rocket science people you sell the sight like a fishing lure and once you hook them you make sure they stay hooked. No posts at all equals no users! Fishing Minnesota directs people directly to the FORUM INDEX. Not deep into the forum with no easy way to get back out to the index. Stop, I see it there, yep like I said before we give them two choices "main forum page" or "Back to Myfishing Pals". If they pick the wrong one they didn't even know there was a forum index.

Step back and pretend your a new user "KISS" (keep it simple stupid)

Have your son or daughter start from the main page and tell them there picture is on this website "find it"....
Very hard to find a place to start.

The main page is full of to much writing. It needs a simple index with pictures! BAM! STUFF! "Wow there I am daddy is that on the internet" "will other people see that" "Yes dear everyone that comes to the site sees it"

Keep in mind how much viewable area a person sees on there screen.
Put the things that you direct the people to on top with flair.

Lets do a test and have Keith stop posting the rest of the week.
Webdude has totals from previous weeks. Within a couple of days when people figure out they cant come here and read a few dimwitted stories from a couple of hicks from the north they drift to the next site. Ask someone that is involved with the IBOTS. They are all great people! Every single one I met is great. But when hype of being an ibot drifted away so is the sight. Even worse they split!

One last thing don't demand reports from users. This isn't my job its a free website. You ask for reports politely like an adult.

I am off the soapbox go ahead and stone me!

This is my .02 cents worth.

Sand Burr,

I think you have valuable advice and would like to utilize it. If you and/or others have any suggestions as to the menu and what to present and how to present it, I am all ears. I have, after all, tried to make this site more about the users and what they would like and less about me or anything someone is selling.

You asked some questions about FM and yes, I do post there ocassionally. In fact, I was surprised that I was able to link my site in my signature over there. Last year, every post of mine was edited so my signature and link was deleted. But you are right, I only got a few replies to one of my posts and the most valuable was from users here.

As for the menu system here, I am all ears. I thought I was doing everyone a service by busting the forum into sections like I did. But in my exuberance, maybe I fell into the trap of not seeing the forest because of the trees. I still like the idea of 6 forums. I have been able to find stuff quicker and most have been posting their info in the correct spots. That is a good thing, I hope.

Are you saying I should nix the recent posts in each forum on the home page? That I could easily do. I kind of did it just to see if I could. Believe me, it would be a lot easier to just have a link to the forum index. In fact, the more I think about it the better that idea seems to be. I would even take it a step further and get rid of all the recent posts in the forum index too. Maybe just show stats.

As for the text on the home page, we are getting into an area that a lot of webmasters have to deal with. That is walking a fine line between what is user friendly and what search engines want/need. I finally am on top for a lot of the phrases and I need to keep us there. BUT you bring up a good point. How to focus and get the user to where they want to go quickly and efficiently. Where do their eyeballs stray and what do they see. Frankly, I am too close to the site to see this. To me, it is a big blurr. Of course, I can get around okay... I put everything where it is! I need help folks!

So here's the skinny...

Any suggestions will be looked at VERY seriously. Sand Burr, I take what you said to heart and I am willing to jack around stuff and make this easy for anybody to use, be they a computer guy like me or the 50 year old who doesn't know how to boot their machine. I have always struggled with things like the order of the menu and what exactly to present there. I think the main focus shoud be the forums index page, then pictures, then the directory. After that I am not sure.

So folks, if you got any suggestions, please chime in. I need help and I am way too involved in the programming of this site to be objective. I am looking at it with a jaundiced eye because I am seeing things way differently then most of you do, or at least a lot differently then a new user would. I think to simplify would be great. Any and I mean ANY help would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to start this immediately. I can start by getting rid of the recent post stuff, having people go straight to the form index page, getting rid of recent post stuff there so people can get to the forum they want, quicker.

What say you all?
