Alright, I take my girlfriends 8 year old fishing with me. What I'm wondering is does every child give up after a half hour if no bite? I just want to know if there is a trick to use to keep the attention on the fishing. Any ideas?

try fishing for sunnies any thing to keep them in fish .
they may be small but if you hit it just right they will have a ball.
but what ever you don't try for eyes or pike if they are not bitting thats the bigest turn off for a kid.

Hey Beerman--

Total agreement on what has been posted. Just get them in some action. Size and species doesn't even matter. Gills, bullheads--anything that lets them feel a fish on the end of the line.

A little trick many dads have used to keep attention spans up is the three prong approach. The play, eat, fish approach. Let them bring a few toys of some sort in the boat, buy plenty of snacks, and bring simple fishing gear they can use. The alternating of these three can enable them to stay happily in the boat, or on the bank, for a good long while without becoming bored. My kids have caught numbers of fish just dragging their lines behind the boat while they ate an apple or played with a toy.

One other thing, that has at least helped me, is to consciously keep a sense of humor. It is awful easy to get frustrated as you unhook your child’s line from a lure he has tangled for the tenth time in an hour as you see a 15 pound northern spit your bait out and the opportunity is lost. But with kids humor abounds! One day my oldest son and I were in the boat fishing a small 300 acre lake in Northwest Wisconsin. I was using the three prong approach of play, eat, fish. He had reeled in and had his crawler in the bottom of the boat. He wolfed down some trail mix and played with a match box car for five minutes or so. He then put the car down, picked up his crawler, held it up close to his face and told the crawler, “OK, coffee breaks over Jim. Time to get back to work”. He was just under five years old at the time. I laughed long and hard. I have also laughed over that many days since. With kids there is always a humorous side to the day.

Some good memories to be made at these younger ages--ones they and the adults will neither forget!

Good Fishing,

Beerman,
This is what you need:
snacks!
candy!
food!

Let him take a break and even suggest it after 15 minutes.
If you catch a fish get him over there and let him reel it in.
Look for successful fishing locations. Fish for sunfish off the dock with corn. Kids love the kooky stuff. If they stop biting look for turtles. Ask him questions like "Why do you think turtles climp up on stumps and sticks out of the water?" Turn it educational. The fishing comes natural but only if he has fun!

The food, toy, fish agenda is a great idea. Boy if you can just find the fish ,he will be hooked for life. This is a great thing you are doing for this boy.
You are making a huge difference in his future manhood.

Thanks for the input guys! It is greatly appreciated. I'll give each and every idea a try and let ya all know when he asks me to go fishing. When that happens it will be a happy moment.

A week ago . or so.. Monday a mother was fishing with her 2 kids at the river, and TRYING to show them a few things.. In the end she ended up fishing while her kids were chasing frogs because they weren't catching anything. They put a bullfrog in her minnow pail( I was about 25 feet down river walking a stretch of shore for pike in the weeds.) so I wonder how many minnow she had left when they did leave.

Even though they didn't catch any fish (when I was around anyway) I'm sure they enjoyed the experience.... it's not always about catching the fish.

Even a BAD day of fishing is better than a good day of work; paydays excluded!
