nope, haven't been out 'troutin' .. and there's actually not that much trout talk in the forums usually... wouldn't mind some more since I did buy a trout stamp this year, mainly so I can fish for smallies from some lake superior fishing areas

so what kind of trout do you have in the river?
I used to roll the rocks over in the river bed to expose hilgramites. We also used crawlers for the german browns.
The brookies like the bugs. I do not have a good river for trout ,but we got these pits that I'll use pink powerbait and a split shot 20" up toss her out and let it float off of bottom. We would pound those rainbows that way.

CK,
we got browns and rainbows in root and whitewater rivers. Brookies are in the small cold streams. Im gonna give your tactics a try. Good luck with your fishing this weekend.

are you kidding me Beerman. As soon as the ice was gone I was already wishing for Thanksgiving when the ice comes back.
Once ice went we had our days of mules with gills& crappies. Then we do the damage to the eyes. Now that summer is almost here it'll be time to hit the rivers for big fish. I'm out to kill time until grouse & early goose opens.
After deer hunting is when I get to have my real fun.
Thats were I earned my name. 1 guy at a time depending on their pain threshold will come over to see what the heck I'm using. The 1st question is minnow or waxey. Nope ,just hair & a hook.Yea,right is the response with their eyes rolloing in their head. Well it doesn't take too long & he is back asking again & this time I'll show him.He may not bite on the concept that day ,but within a few days of observation , he'll succomb.
Confidense is a powerfull thing ,so when you tell the guy forget everything you know ,he's done. He will really have to have the drive inside to want to learn. Alot of guys don't have it.
They just want to get away from whatever ,have a few beers and go home.
For the guy that really wants a dinner,he'll pay attention. Every year the list of jig users goes up if only a few guys at a time.
So those of us here at MFP that want to learn there will be a clinic or even 1 on 1 if you want to set it up with me.

Here it is in a nutshell......

All crappies eat minnows. When they are aggresive ,anyone can get a limit.
The times I get them are when noone else can like 30 below 0 with a super high pressure.Any high for that matter will slow them down or turn them off,but to hook a dinner when no one else can is saying something.
2-10 days after ice out is another time that most baits are too big & the jig still fills the pail.Sometimes my 64th is too big ,thats why I make 80th's and 100th's.I have to be able to downsize.
I have asked the guys what they see. The response is that the fish swims up to the minnow and back down to the bottom,HELLO that fish wanted to eat ,but he saw the big minnow that he did not want to chase. If he came up to the small minnow that can not swim fast well that slab knows this is an easy meal & will proceed to come up under it slowly & open his mouth, suck in a little water, walla dinner. Only now my hook is burind in the top part of his mouth, pure bone.

Well lets do business, I would like to order some jigs from you. Last night I browsed through the other sections of the forum and saw your address. Is this the same address yet that I could send you a check for them? Name your price. Yes I would like to meet and go over the use of the jig either 1 on 1 or if you get a clinic set up. I am working on house for the summer so I can go ice fishing more this winter. Well gotta go, period 2 is starting for cup finals. Go Oilers!!!!!!
