Ok, here is a good topic that hasn't been discussed much on this site. Lets get a list going of good campsites in that we have visited over the years so that people can maybe try a new site and find some hidden gems.

Here is my list:

Interstate State Park
Only about an hour from the metro area is is located on the St. Croix with lots of good hiking and some fishing in the river. if you are into rock climbing its another great place for that. Being close to the metor area it fills up fast but if the minnesota side is full go to the wisconsin side.

Nerstrand State Park
South of the metro area, nice little river that runs through it. Alot of easy hiking trails, actually is great if you are into running the trails are great for going for a nice long run. Try to be quiet at night the park rangers will come bug you if you are too loud. Nice little place.

Obvioulsy you have the BWCAW.
Lake Winchell is a beautifull lake. Is a long deep lake with decent trout and rumors of monster pike. Some guys even do some cliff diving off the south side from what I heard. Its a great lake but avoid it is there is a strong east or west wind. It turns into Windhell if the winds are right.

Duluth Area.
Try going out onto the local lakes and camp on the islands. Island lake and Fish lake both have numerous sites. Its frist come first serve but they are nice rustic sites, with good fishing to be had. Make sure you clean up after yourself becuase these sits are only maintained by the users and by a few concernce fisherman in the area.

Washington State and Oregon Coast
These areas have some great parks if you get out that way much. Haystack Rock area on the oregon coast is a great spot. Mt. Rainier is a great park with lots to do and of course you got the mountain. Beautiful area in general. Whidbey Island north of Seattle is another awesome spot. Whidbey Island State Park has the best campsites I have ever stayed at, lots of water, if you bring a boat you have good fishing in the straights around the islands. Great hiking, lots of vineyards in the area for wine tasting. It has everything. Also the place I proposed to my wife, I think they built a monument to mark the spot smile smiley

lets here some more great places, I am always looking for the hidden jewels of the state and country.

Thought I would dust off an old thread.

Here are a few more good spots.

St. Croix State Park
Just east of Hinkley alond the St. Croix. Huge park with nice campsites. Good for hiking running, four wheeling, biking, swimming, canoeing and fishing.
You can rent canoes for either a 3 mile trip or a 8 mile trip. Great smallie fishing as well. There is also a cool fire tower you can climb, you might want to forget that one if you are afraid of heights.
Its one of my favorite places to camp.

Tettegouche State Park on the north shore of Lake Superior. I love it up there. Nice trout lakes.
