Pikeminnow.org

THIS was posted in the Duluth News Tribune today, from an Oregon newspaper. People are getting paid a large amount of money to catch the 'Northern Pikeminnow' that eats all the salmon hatchlings and minnows. This is in Oregon, and some people have quit their regular jobs and are strictly cashing in on these fish, which are ground up for fertilizer.

Looking at the site, something I really don't understand is they are paying people $500 for catching 'Tagged' fish. If the Oregon DNR is cathing the fish and tagging them, why not just kill them instead of putting them back into the water?

when I read 'northern pikeminnow' I didn't think a fish that looked like this, I sort of figured a fish resembling what we would know from the Pike family here.

I guess after thinking about it, the tagged fish are tagged and released to try and draw more people out to eliminate the fish while trying for the big money ones? Hope they're only tagging males and killing females though.

I would imagine the reason they are tagged is to track them...to see where they go during certain seasons, growth patterns, feeding habits etc. Not sure of its origion, but dang, that is a prime example why people should not throw bait into the water!

That just looks like 1 big crappie minnow!!!...lol
