First off I am attempting to name the mighty jig. “NiBR” pronounced ~niburr~. All great jigs have a easy to remember name! NBR=No Bait Required and the i=Crappie Keith.
See the end of the post for some amateur photos I took of the jig with my new camera.

Crappie Keith and I braved the weak minded elements last Saturday evening to get back to the basics. A 12foot skid and electric trolling motor was the ride and a pocket full of “NiBR”’s was our weapon. We were also going to give Keith a test spin with some of my hand made Ultra light rods. Keith brought me back to Lil Red were him and Pierre fished the night before. We tied up and decided he would use his own rod for awhile and then switch over to a custom. I cant exactly remember how many seconds it took to get a fish but I do know my cork didn’t settle before it went down. That was Keith’s opening to say “can you believe there was no Bait on there?” All I want to say is Cast after Cast and Fish after Fish laughing and giggling like school girls! There is a special thing when good people get together no matter how cold, wet and miserable it is outside they sure seam to have fun! Well his line took a number on him and he switch over to one of my customs maybe quicker than he wanted but the payoff was huge for him. A custom rod gives you a lot more performance all around and I think it proved itself quickly. It took a few casts and hook sets but Keith figured out how to keep me on the edge of my seat by setting the hook extra hard and having a little red bobber trying to take you out.

Here is a picture of the guides:

We wrapped up the night with about 20 gills and a few crappies mixed in and I was able to go back to my camper with fresh fish. You should of seen the guys back at the campsite looking at me through there windows when I pulled in! They looked like little kids waiting for Santa! They all came piling out even before I shut the truck off. I think I could of sold 100 jigs right there over the top of my 5 gallon pale of fish. Here is a picture of Keith with a few of the little guys…

The next day I start taking pictures of the “NiBR” to attempt to get some close up pictures that everyone can see a little better. Please enjoy them:

I've noticed, he doesn't use nearly the amount of "hair" that commercial lure companies use. The stuff that as a kid, I remember having all over my grandpa's tackle box. I don't fish Crappies myself anymore, haven't since i was 12 with the Grandparents, but that's what I remember about it, jigs shedding hair all over.

Thanks for the great story SB. An acronym NIBR good idea!
Those heads were my 1st atempt at painting. My eyes are way better now,not that it makes a difference to the fish. It's more marketing than anything, but being an artist I am tring to make them beautious for the fisherman as well as inviting to the fish.
I'd like to have say a pencil eraser next to the jig to show actual size with size reference. Those are 64ths for the most part. The other jigs get smaller yet. Its nice to have the variety of sizes to match what the fish wants.
The bigger crappies are biting in Whisp.,are you going to be up this weekend S.B?
Here one NoMM No Meat Minnow....or BNR -Bait Not Required...TMDWTFW
The most Deadly weapon to Fish with...
Everyone around here calls it THE JIG...
The guy that tought me how to tie, well his dad was named ACE ergo
Ace in the hole...

I will be up late friday night with my oldest and I am kind of a fishing dad to a 18 year old that is going to be with me. I was thinking of giving the NiBR a run over at the spot in fishermans or heading to Atkin. I need to run my boat this weekend to make sure it will run for the next. I will pretty much be up every weekend till fall hunting!

You noticed Sportsnut1 Very good, the whole idea is small,little,downsize.6/0 prewaxed mono cord thread is the thinnest I can tie with.I put enough hair to cover the hook and create the body of a bait fish.
My buddies that tie call a jig with long hair /bulky hair a "paintbrush". You can not pull hair out as I glue it all after being knotted 4 times with 30 raps&they last for 400-500 fish maybe more.
It's a slam to the tier.Finese is our goal, because we know how deadly THE jig is ,we strive for less is better. That's why I just went through several hundred 100th oz.heads. I will not use them as the standard but on some days it's the only size I can cull my limit .Until a guy gets it(downsize & slow)he will have alot of skunked days. Once you learn to recognize the signs like the hook is in the front lip instead of engulfed half way down his mouth. In the lip says it's slow and fast when it enhales the jig.
Anyone can get fish when they are aggresive, but it's during cold fronts & high pressure that they turn off or slow down and that's when downsizing gets the job done.
It's pretty simple really and once you take notice of how things went. Now you start out the next time and you remember 3 days ago it was this kind of weather ,now it's the same today so I'll work my pattern the same way.
Figuring out the pattern is what takes time. Work the breaks & structure ,determine where they are through electronics . Now work fast to slow & you will find the technique that works.

Getting back to THE jig and for that matter any jig. You'll find that they like to sink and go to the bottom. Hello isn't that where the fish are.
Have a great opener everyone!!

I should add that Sand Burr's rods are the real deal.
I admit because of the weakness in the Guide series blank ,I was having to rear hard and fast, which made the cork zing through the air when I'd miss. The custom rod that SB built had the power so that I didn't need to do it.It took a bit to get used to it.
Just imagine how easy it is to cast too not having to whip it.
I gotta say it's not easy being good with garbage!!!!!!!!!!!he-he

O Lord give me strenght,please
