DS,
Tell your nephew congrats on that Cuda! I could only dream of catching one of those things. We were down in Mexico a couple years ago snorkling and the guide told us to take off any shiny or flashy jewlery, because there is always a chance that a cuda might think you're a tasty meal. Scary Stuff. Good Work!!

That fish looks like it gave him a run for his money.
Great way to hook your nephew for good on fishing.

That's a good fish for a kid to catch, they aren't always the hardest fighting fish but they still put up a pretty good fight and they get pretty big, I have seen them close to 6 feet long. Plus they look mean.

What did they do w/it? They are dangerous to eat at that size b/c they eat the reef fish, which eat the reef, which has a poison called cigutera which is really dangerous. Plus they are really bony, but people I know who have eaten small ones say they taste pretty good. They make great shark bait however b/c they are really oily and slimy and create a great chum slick, that is whay the guides/charter captains keep them.

Brandon is having that one go on the wall. He is pretty excited too. Shoot, it's bigger than anything I have caught, in length. I guess I'm not sure what it would weigh. It will look good on the wall!!

That is a nice sized fish, esp. when you aren't used to catching anything that big. He should be proud of it.

One of the most difficult things I had to learn when I started fishing salt water after I moved here is that the fish are a lot bigger in the ocean. The biggest fish I caught growing up in Michigan was a 4-5 lb. catfish, I caught a few nice walleye but never bigger than 2-3lbs. I now have reeled in (actually team caught when my wife got tired or scared that she would lose them) a 37lb. 12 oz dolphin (mahi mahi), 30lb. yellowfin tuna, a 20lb. wahoo, numerous "small" dolphin in the 4-10lb. range and countless others that dwarf anything I have caught freshwater fishing. It is amazing what grows in the ocean. What I like the most however is that, regardless whether I am 20 miles offshore or on the canal at the end of my street catching bluegills w/my stepson I have the same feeling when something grabs the other end of the line, and that, I think, is what makes fishing awesome. Hope your nephew keeps it up.
