It took me 3 years of trial and error, but I finally figured out how to use this dang Baitcaster reel I bought on sale 4 years ago during a discount sale at Outdoor advantage off the main highway in Cloquet (in front of wally world).

I went out in the yard with an old Bass plug that I took the trebles off and casted about 300 times and monkeyed with everything. Finally figured out what the little instruction manual meant by making an adjustment to let the bait fall on it's own and stuff. Sheesh.. sure is easy when yer in the yard, we'll see what happens the last weekend in May when BASS season opens. I'm gonna use it mostly for flipping tubes and texas worms..and some top water skitters.

You'll fall in love with it once you get the reel dialed into your bait weight.
Another trick on backlashes. Hold your thumb on the spool and hold tight, now pull the line out of the reel the way it comes off normally. The backlash will pull out only you have to hold the spool with your thumb real tight.9 out of 10 times it comes out easy. The other time ,get a knife.

I hope that's not any indication of how it might go for me. After much deliberation, I took the plunge on a biatcaster and rod to go with it a couple weeks ago. I haven't used it yet or had the chance to practice, but I plan on doing quite a bit before the opener. I also have heard people talk about setting the reel so the lure drops steadily by itself. Hope I can figure it out.

I would suggest doing what I did today, going out in the yard with an old plug, WITHOUT the hooks of course and casting it and practicing.. don't go for long casts.. I sure didn't.. 60 feet was about my max. For the tubes and texas rigs I plan on using it for that's plenty far for me.. I just have to work on my aim some but I'll save that for the water.

It overall went pretty well, I only had to walk off a backlack twice.. and then it wasn't major at all because I had alreayd figured out the bait's 'drop weight'. Now I have to figure out what the mag bal (magnet balance maybe??) dial on the side does.. it didn't seem to effect much of anything either way. Is it something to do with drag besides the wheel drag?

The magnetic balance is more of a fine tuning after you have tuned your brake.

The easiest way to adjust your brake is too push your release and let the lure fall, keep tightening the brake untill the spool rotates at the same speed as the lure falls, when you get the spool to stop when the lure hits the ground you have it just about perfect.

Unfortunately it still takes alot of practice but the thumb still plays a big role in all of this.
