I would like to start out by saying that the minnow is a large part of a fishes diet, right?
Well the jig I tie has several qualities of the minnow.
It has small eyes that look like real eyes. The thread color is red to simulate the gills. The top of the hair is darker as the back of a minnow and the belly is lighter in color usually white or yellow .The thread I use as well as the hair /calftail helps me keep the over all size and bulk down .The smaller I can make it the better.
A crappie has different sizes of feeding windows. Some days when the pressure is high, cold front, full of roe,low oxygen in the water,or whatever the reason the mood is neutral to negative the fish still eats. On those days as a fisherman we try to slow down, get smaller ,right?Well thats what the jig does in every sense. I use line to match around .006 dia.with a loop note to get the jig to hang horizontal. It dances freely this way. The knot sucks but I can tie more. So on ice in Feb. or for the 1st few weeks of ice off there is no deadlier offering.I also think the hair hides the hook better than a feather.I also take pride in the fact that they hold together for many hundred more fish.
The other question is why do most fisherman want to hang a piece of meat on a hair or feather jig for that matter. The jig is the minnow ,no need to make it bigger. Now later as the water warms they will hit anything, because the window just got bigger, way bigger. So the minnow guys are now getting them.
Everyone I talk to up here is having a tough time getting the crappie. I see them & they say ,but they won't take anything I have in my box. Rick & I have in the last 6 days since ice out culled over 120 crappies and several gills and bass(3after work sessions).Sometimes the 64th is too big so I drop to an 80th or even 100th.When it's 30 below & high pressure the window it tiny so the 100th get's it done. I have brought my jig to Reed's ,Gander,Oars-n-mine plus several other bait shops around URL and they all say the same thing. It is too small for my customer. So Being a normal guy who spends mucho time in our fields and streams I've found this jig and now ite it myself. I have used other tiny baits and they will work too,but the jig has not let me down ever.On the busiest days I will stand toe to toe with anyone in numbers and size and on the slowest days I can still cull a limit when the other have a hard time just getting skunked. Thats it,it works. Not to be a prick ,but show me something better.I'm all ears, that is why I learned to tie the jig.
I am competive and when I saw the jig out preform everything I knew, I had to make the switch.I went back from time to time, but it never made a difference for the better. So now they call me CrappieKeith because of the jig.Out in the open on BSL & Minnewawa I pounded the crappies ice fishing. Now with open water it is the same, hey what are you using? Hair & a hook!!!!

Sounds good CK, I am going to be up at our cabin on Minnewawa in a week or so to put the dock in, might have to hook up.

I wasn't trying to rip on your jig, not one bit, I just wanted to know what made your jig. "The jig"

Please dont take it like I was ripping on you or your jigs!

Sounds like a great little lure.

There was no offense taken. On the contrary,I am glad you wanted to know.I enjoy teaching others the how too's and the why's as I understand them. To be honest ,What I've come up with as to why may not hold water ,but it makes sense to me.You know ,I read Winklemans stuff, the Linder boys,Genz,Roach,Chip Leer.I try to make sense of it all.
I think when you boil it all down, does it or does it not help me?I've left MPLS. for 368 lakes & better than 600 miles of rivers.I gave it all up for the lifestyle living up here . There are 2 weeks a year I am shut down from hunting and fishing. We just went through it, the ice off & waiting for the slight warm-up.So it is crappies and gills until openers then walleyes and pike until early goose then waterfoul season, then deer now back to ice fishing. If I'm going to be stuck in a rut, this would be it.
Any tips you can share are appreciated Chris! Thankyou again for asking.
