I received the call at 6:00 P.M. on a cold St. Cloud evening. Temps had dropped to -12 F and the wind was howling. The call was coming from my youngest son, Cody.

A father's first reaction is - What happened? Are you in the ditch? Does your car need a jump?

Not this time. As Cody's voice panted from exhaustion he said, "I'm ok dad. I just wanted to let you know that we are out in the fish house and I just pulled in a nine pound walleye!"

My Boy blush smiley)

I will send a picture when he sends it to me. You know teenagers.

Enjoy the Experience!

That is the best when that happens. My daughter did that to me as well only she caught the fish out of the hole I was fishing in. Just puts a smile on your face and warms your heart. Congratulations and can't wait to see the picture.

Good job and congrats to your son justnorth! That will get him hooked for life!

I have 4 kids in our family. 3 girls and one boy. The older girls really could care less about fishing. (College and High School). The youngest has gone out with me a couple of times (7 years old). But my boy (soon to be 10 years old) has been fishing with me quite a bit in the last 3 years. He is becoming quite the fisherman. He absolutely loves it. In fact, there are days when he out-fishes me. He is now at the point where he can bait himself and do most of what it takes to fish. I am kind of proud of him and I really enjoy the fact that we can do something together that we both like. In todays world of computers and video games, it seems that the youth is further apart from their parents then they ever have been. I think we need to find things in common to bring families closer together again. Fishing is a great way to do this. You actually have real conversations with your kids, especially when things are slow.

I am looking forward to many adventures out on the ice and water with my boy. We plan trips together and get excited about the big one, even the ones that got away. He invites his friends to go with us too. Some of these kids seem to have dads that aren't interested in what they do and I find that sad. I think we need all we can to bond with the kids. If not fishing, then find something else. Just don't park your kids in front of the TV and think that is a good babysitter for them. Get involved.

Anyway. These are just my thoughts. It is harder to find a common interest and explore and strengthen a relationship then it is to just not get involved. I don't think you should park your kids somewhere because you are too busy or don't have the time. It takes a little effort. I believe you will be the better for it. Your kids and others you love will be better for it too.

Enough of the mushy stuff and on with life again. AND to make my long point shorter... Take a kid fishing!!!!

See Ya!

That's cool justnorth. I have a girl 7 and a boy 2 so I can relate to the story. Even though I haven't hit the car driving stage with them yet. Heading out right now for a Alexandria Ice fishing weekend.

Tell your kid "Good Job!" justnorth. And whatever you do, keep 'em fishin'. It's a tonic for the soul.

gee, i usually don't say things like that.

No not my house or my hole.

But as a father that has been hot-holed by his son for as many years as I count, I feel it is my obligation to return the favor. I am on my way now to check out his honey hole blush smiley)
