I'm starting a local fishing school for kids and adults, as well as a tackle lending program. The website is www.thefishingtree.com. I could use some advice and ideas. It is a free program. Any suggestions?

I guess after reading through your website the one question I have is how does one get involved?

The site has good info about what the program does but not much info on how we can get involved either by volunteering, donating tackle, or monetarily.

"How can we help?"

That is yet to come. We are very early in the process. The program will launch in May. Right now we are looking for advice as far as teaching tools, suggested classes things like that. Also suggestions on how to run the lending program. Things to add to the site. Anything like that.

As far as the lending library goes, we are currently building up the equipment.

The school will likely start as a local project this season to crawl before we run. Next season is when I hope to really make some big things happen.

I guess if this was my project and I wanted to gain interest and awareness of it I would start by possibly holding a fishing derby for Kids. This should get the ball rolling and you should be able to see what the kids are in need of learning and should help you structure further classes and events to teach kids the things that are missing.

One idea would maybe be to have fisherman volunteer to help teach the kids, also these guys could be assigned 2 kids, each fisherman could bring 2 poles for the kids to use, (we all have atleast 2)

This could all be started by a short class room style discussion about CPR, and protecting/respecting fish.

I think that CPR and respecting the resource is the biggest part of this.

As far as teaching techniques one on one teaching is always going to be the best. If you are able to keep the ration of kids to teachers as close to 1:1 as possible the more the kids will learn and the more the kids will feel like they are getting the attention that all kids want.

Depending on age you could start kids out fishing from shore but then as you get into older kids taking them out on boats would be great since boating is a big part of fishing and alot of learning can be done on a boat.

This info may not be exactly what you are looking for but its the first thing I thought of and I bet alot of people would get behind this and help out.

Just a thought, one of your classes could be on different "fish species" that are available to anglers in this neck of the woods. Sort of a "food chain" / "fish family tree" concept.....sorta plays right into your name too.

Looks like a GREAT program (that I had not heard of before) so additonal "PROMOTION" comes to mind. We will be certain to run an "Ad" for your program on our website in addition to adding the information to our Forum.

We would also be glad to donate some time/guiding, teach some clasess or provide you with (non-musky) tackle.

Hopefully everyone out there does what they can to support this cause. I know I'd be dead or in prison had my mom not turned me onto fishing as a child. Kids nowadays need to turn off the PS2 and experiance the great outdoors.

Thanks for the great suggestions and encouragement. I guess I figure, lets have/give childhood memories of outdoors, nature, fishing instead of only memories of tv, movies and video games.
