Seminars
No additional 2009 seminars due to fishing season. My
last seminars at Cabela’s and R&R Marine will well attended and the seminars
were more interactive than the usual seminar. I really enjoyed the interaction.
I am just as eager to learn as they are!

HDS
4th Review
I
finally got to test the Lowrance HDS 8 and 10 on the water and they performed
better than expected. I had problems picking up the prop wash last year with the
Broadband LBS-1 and that problem is resolved for me. I can troll with the kick
wide open and read the graph easily.
The
menus are easy to use. At first it was difficult to use the menus since my brain
has too many memories for the LCX menus, but by the 2nd day I felt
comfortable and I was helping other Lowrance HDS users transfer waypoints, use
their map cards, and other minor problems they had.
New
this year is an improved addition to the share waypoint feature. When you
network 2 units with the LowranceNet NMEA 2000, you can not only share a newly
created waypoint but delete shared waypoints on more than one
GPS.
The
LCG 4000 worked well with one hitch. You must select the LCG instead of have the
units automatically select between the internal and the LCG 4000. The accuracy
improved after I did this and I don’t know why, yet!

DrDepth BT (bottom
hardness) Edition (2nd review)
I didn’t
collect any data to practice the BT bottom hardness with but Per from DrDepth is
working on retrieving the data from low quality chart recordings (log charts) so
I can use all my library of recording to test on bottom hardness. Now that my
tournament is done I will collect more data for bottom hardness
maps.

Red Wing

I did
poorly and will share why I am often at the bottom and rarely at the top though
I have won many major tournaments. I fish without a team for information and I
look for big fish all week relentlessly. If I don’t find big fish my small fish
pattern is often weak so I do poorly. But sometimes I just can’t find the right
fish and I fail, for that reason. I do have a nice journey with my plans for
winning even if I fail. It is more fun to thin k you will win on the way to a
loss than to think you will not win on the way to a loss. It also helps the ego
strength with serious losses when you have won a tournament before.
I can even
smile when I lose! It was nice to be on the water fishing and competing
again.

Doc’s
Tournament Crankbait Contest
The
1st tournament winning crankbait was the #5 Shadrap and
2nd was the Salmo #5 Hornet. Any red or orange color was
important.

Minn Kota Terrova
I used the Terrova all week because I needed to troll and
this motor gives me the option of a good foot pedal for precision control and
the Autopilot feature is valuable for trolling with the kicker for thrust. I
tested the Re-Action System on the Terrova and this add-on improved my boat
control and throttle control. Read the boat control article in the Tip of the
Week for details.
